What Tools (and Process) To Change The Shoes Of Brakes

I have bought new shoes for my 10" drum brakes.
I would like to change them myself but I remember my poor fingers when I was doing this long ago.

There are springs and they don't like me and attacked my fingers, I had to take a special attention to this operation.

Maybe all experienced people have good tricks to help me, and my 1971 CJ5 4 cyl.

    Thanks.

A good pair of brake spring pliers makes taking the springs off & putting them back on a lot easier.

Or, take the drums off both sides, but change the brake shoes one side at a time. You can use the other side as a reference.

Take the drums off of both wheels on 1 axel. Take one set apart at a time. That way if you need help getting it back together you can look at the other one.

If you like cussing...Use screw drivers and pliers. :D

I'm in the middle of doing a 4 way brake job on my daughters Nissan. Had to look at the other side for reference!

Not sure about the jeep but there's often a primary shoe and a secondary shoe(pad).

They have to go the right way, I've made this mistake before on a Nissan

    All of the above. (y)

You can do it, and it's not difficult, but the first one will be annoying.

Yes I'll keep one as a model, test what I did and then make the 2nd one.
The shoes which I bought are all the same model/size, I suppose that there is no primary/secondary.
All this will be clear when I open the brake.
My supplier is Jeepvillage, he is the most serious for parts.
He explained to me to check first the size of drums because at this period there was 10" or 11".
    So it was 10".
I know that there is a 'star' to turn to put the shoes in the good position.
It is not the system where we have to turn a key at the back of the wheel (excentric) to position the shoe at the good distance of the drum.

Yes but one of them received brake fluid from a small leak and there is a difference between the 2 brakes, so I plan to put 2 new shoes to have a good symetric action.
This is for the technical safety control which must be done before october 5th.
At the 1st trial they said that this was asymetric and rejected.
because safety control is every 5 years, I want to do the right thing and... new shoes and test after cleaning.

A shoe which received brake fluid is not the same and it is difficult to make dry.
The solution would be to put brake fluid on the other wheel ... or exchange shoes by 1/2 ...
