I believe I have 3.73 gears with my 33's. I know they measure 32. Even know they are 33. I was thinking this king 4.27 or 4.10 gear. I think anything above is too much. With my odd fire 225 it's questionable on 4.10 or 4.26

Going back aways, no, you can't put D27 knuckles on a D30. But you don't need to, anyway.

Would the disc brakes fit the 30s then? Off k10 truck from disc brake conversion thread

In the Front Disc Brake Tutorial thread that Focker created, at about post 33 I added a few additions regarding issues that I ran into when upgrading my Dana 30. The Dana 30 original came with drum brakes and I was upgrading using K10 style brackets.

Well I have a guy selling his axles and has a d30 that measures 58.5 across. And on 11" drums. I'm thinking about going that rough time from my 27 because afraid my 33x12.5 might rub the frame. Might test it tomorrow and throw one on my 62 cj5 that I'm building. Want to get rid of the steely rim with aluminum mickys

I transferred my disc brakes from my D27 to my D30. I'm using the Ford style 1 1/8" rotor with the GM calipers.

If it is that wide it might be a wide track cj axle from a 82 to 86 CJ. Most were 3.54 or 2.72 gears with 5 bolt locking hubs.

Just my 2 cents...I run 4.10s and 33 inch BFGs with my Dauntless, no overdrive. Pull a 13 foot camper no trouble. It doesn't scream on the highway, but moves along with traffic. I'd stay away from a Scout 44, unless you use Jeep Dana 30 knuckles on out, due to the 8 stud scout spindle, and weird steering knuckle that you need a long pitman arm to match. That being said, even though I have a Dana 44 in front of my Jeep, I've beaten many Dana 30s with some aggressive tires and not broken many. They are a strong little axle and more than adequate for most applications.

Wide track 30 wouldn't have drums.

They also have crap for caster unless you cut and turn the C's.

So.maybe the guy measured wrong or switched disc to drums. All in all is it a good idea to go to the 30 axle? If so what else would I need to swap the 27 with a 30 to my 66 cj5 like would I need a new drives shaft? They have different number of spines right? Would that play a role?

I usually look for a narrow track D30 when I'm swapping into a pre 72 Jeep. So 72-81. 76 was the optional year for disc brakes. Pre 76 is drum, post 77 is disc. The drum axles are pretty easy to swap to disc if you already have one, but if you're shopping, finding one with discs already is probably money ahead. The Dana 30 does have a slightly longer pinion so driveshaft mods *may be necessary. If you have lift and didn't change the driveshaft, then you may be able to sneak it back in without any mods and be closer to stock in the spline travel on the slip joint. The U-bolts are a different width because the tubes are larger on the 30 vs the 27. I've made the old parts work, but it's a pain in the butt. Easier to buy D30 Ubolts and spring plates. You may have to weld on a shock mount in front of the axle depending on the plate you get. You might also have the peanut joints on your driveshaft. I've not seen a replacement yoke for a 30 that uses the peanut shaft, so you may need to change the driveshaft and yoke on the t-case... Forced upgrade, lol. The spline count in the D30 for axleshafts is 27 vs 10 in the D27- Lots stronger. There are a lot of things to consider when upgrading to a D30, but all in all, It's a pretty easy upgrade to do and worth the effort in my opinion.

Yeah, absolutely a necessity to cut n turn C's on a scout axle, they have 0deg till 1980 then 2deg in 80.
