    Painted a fender and tailgate. Working on two hole knuckle up grade and tie rod flip.
     
  4. Saturday I replaced the two TBI injectors in the throttle body of my CJ's 4.3L. I had suspected partially clogged injectors and had verified the spray pattern being "dribbly" along the cone pattern. This was accompanied by a cold start puttering / popping I'd get out of the left dual tailpipe along with an extended high idle until my coolant temp hit 100 degrees when it would finally drop a bit, and again at 140 degrees.

    I was hesitant to order injectors because new ones were in the 80 dollar range and the online reviews were pretty poor (2 out of 5 stars), with several stating that they ended up with USED injectors that performed better. However a few weeks back we had a customer at the shop who had clogged TBI injectors in his 95 Chevy van and he bought remanufactured ones for about 45 bucks each. The van ran so good, it would peel tires! That got me reconsidering replacing the injectors in my CJ.

    At work we got an email from Rock Auto that the Autoline reman injector line was offering 10% off for the month of April. So I pulled the trigger and ordered them. They showed up Saturday, so they got installed right away. As soon as I started it up, I noticed the difference. The initial idle was lower and the popping stopped completely. As far as power, seems much the same unless going uphill, where I can feel a greatly improved acceleration.(y)

    Drove the 78 to work. Everything was fine. On the way home it sputtered a little and died. Went to restart and no crank AT ALL. Made me wish I had a clutch so I could start it on the hill I was on. Called friends for help and they were on the way to tow me across town with a six foot chain. :confused:
    The lights came on (in my head). I unplugged the neutral safety switch and SNAP! It fired right up. Cancelled my rescue team and drove on home. Will be testing the wiring and switch soon. Or maybe live with it.

    Got some more work done, made it road ready and drove it. First time in 17 years it has left the property!

    Doing a spring tune up on the Tux. New cap and rotor, AC Delco spark plugs. Had to order new plug wires and a manifold to carb gasket, should be here by Friday. Then I really need to get onto the dash replacement.
     
  9. Changed the oil and filter last night and also wound up re-working my alternator mounting. Since I replaced the two throttle body injectors, lil CJ has been quite the blast scooter at take off - maybe that's the reason there is a line-lock (not connected electrically) mounted to the firewall! I started to hear the alternator belt squeal at about 3K RPM I guess (don't have a tach), so I had a shift indicator, but it sounded like crap and made passer-bys look oddly at me and they already look, but in a nice way, because of all the diamond plate!

    The fabricator modifier who possessed CJ before the PO (yeah, line-lock installer) never had the lower bracket from the water pump to the alternator mounting pivot bolt installed on the 4.3L. It appears I actually bent the bolt tweeking up the RPM's. Alt was tilted back and twisted crooked! Had to dig for a few hours in the hoarded shop to find what I needed, but I DID find one in a box marked "350 brackets". Also found a different but similar looking upper mounting bracket, but it was smaller. Fine with me, lets the alternator sit closer. Of course that posed a new problem - find a V belt that fits. BUT I was able to do that as well.:beer:

    Went to the gas station for my first fill-up. Got my first "cool" from a high school kid filling up his Toyota PU crawler.

    "Fixed" an exhaust manifold leak, on my 1957 F-head.

    Broken manifold stud at the rear of the head, gasket blown. But I don't want to pull the engine to access the stud.

    So I made this...

    Clamped it over some fiberglass rope (stove gasket) and stove cement.

    No more leak!

    Always wanted a hand-crank for engine starting. (I have a phobia about having a dead battery in the boonies.)

    Made one today for the 1957, and installed a modified crank pulley nut to accept it.

    Works great! Shoulda done it years ago.

    began dismantling my 5 to replace the worn out frame. during the rebuild, i'll do a wrangler spring conversion using a rocky road kit i've had for many years, as well as change the manifolds from the 1-bbl originals to the 80s 2-bbl, either using the weber on it now, a mc2100, or a weber 38/38 (less likely). or, i could attempt to install a howell tbi that a friend is giving to me.

    has been grounded since 2013. time to get it back on the road.

    Went on a 30 mile shakedown run. Took it out into it's natural environment. Got the speed up to 60 for a bit to check handling. Much more comfortable at 50. No issues found so far...
