According to the wiring diagram I have of his year model (76), he is on the right track for the BAD turn signal switch.

Just driver side front and rear blinker not working. Also driver front and rear hazard not working. The driver side brake light not working. Both bulbs are good and work on the passenger side. Keep thinking, this is a real *** kicker. New steering column blinker switch arrives tomorrow, keep all those fingers crossed.

The turn signal switch does not have a ground and does not use any so when you get your new switch just plug it in and try it without installing it in the column. That will be confirmation.

To remove the switch/harness from the column the wires need to be pulled out of the connector. They come fairly easy with a small screwdriver to release the lock on each terminal. Once the connector is removed, tie a string to the harness. This will help installing a harness back into the column. Pull the switch up and out, untie the string and leave it inside. If you have an ohmmeter and the wiring diagram, testing can be done without removing the harness.

It's possible to flatten the wires against the plug enough to pull the whole thing up through. a hunk o string tied to the plug before pulling it up through will help with reinstalling.

Well guys I appreciate all the help but I'm done, for now. The new steering column switch looks good but still no drivers side brake, hazard or blinker light. I just pulled the parking brake and checked all wires in the big harness. The passenger blinker will blink the test light but the drivers side will only light up the test light. All front and rear park lights burn normally and so do the headlights. All bulbs are good and I installed a new NAPA blinker module. I am now in rest mode until the police stop me for having no drivers side brake or blinker light. At least with lights on, all back and front lights burn. I AM STUMPED.

Have you done the obvious, and traced the particular wires to see how far they are 'hot' when they should be?

A 12V test light with a sharp probe is a good tool for this.

It's time to connect an independent test wire straight from the switch to the socket or bulb. If the light works, it's a bad connection or wire with the stock setup.

You will notice at the frame harness connector (bottom left) a LT GREEN 23 left turn and hazard. With test lite, check to see if you have power at this point (in and out). From this point the wire is a solid run to the rear light which has another connector from the loom to the lite assymbly. HTH

Is the frame harness the flat plug behind the parking brake? I have checked with test light there. Plug side coming from behind fuse box has blinking test light for passenger and solid light for Drivers side. If there is another frame plug, please picture it or tell me where it is. I am an old machinist by trade and electricity is not my bag. Thanks,

Yes, pretty sure that's the frame harness connector. From there it should be in a plastic loom and follow the body edge to the top of the left rear wheelhouse, where it goes through the body and down to the lights and fuel tank.

    Is the flasher plug good?

The flasher is a two prong type and used for both sides. If it works for the right side then it will work for the left side if the wiring and bulbs are good.
    For the original poster.
I say again. So the pass side is blinking good (means the flasher ckt is good) (means the turn signal switch is good) and on the drivers side (solid light on drivers side) means the flasher is supplying power to the turn signal switch and the turn signal switch is passing the power to the drivers side wiring but the flasher is not seeing enough LOAD to make it flash. LOAD being the 1157 bulb at the left rear/and front. Remove the bulb from the light and test the two pins for power with your test light. If no test light, then you have a broken wire along the frame wire loom. If you do have power showing then you have a bad socket or a defective bulb.

I have a 65 CJ5 and I’m having a problem with my brake lights. I’m almost positive it’s in the blinker switch. Has anyone tried bypassing the blinker switch? I’m not worried about having turn signals at the moment, just need brake lights. Sorry if this is the wrong thread but I searched and couldn’t find anything.

Hi - I'd suggest you post a new thread in the "Early CJ-5" forum. Don't be shy about posting a new thread - give it a descriptive title (ie much more than "Need Help" or such). This is the "Intermediate" forum, meant for 1972 or newer CJs. The discussion above does not relate very well to your wiring.

There is a diagram somewhere on the site here that shows how the turn signal switch works with brake lights and indicators. Look in the technical articles. The brake lights go through the switch and when the left or right indicators are selected, that side of the brake lights is replaced by the flashing signal from the blinker relay.

I pretty much expect that it's not going to be any easier to make the brake lights work without the indicators, than just making the indicators and stop lights work like they are supposed to. I'm not the world's expert on the early Jeeps, but I can guess. The first things to check would be the brake light switch on the master cylinder (a hydraulic switch). Then all the grounds at the lights. Clean all the contacts. Then the blinker relay, any fuses, and the bulbs.

Sorry I wasn’t aware this was for later model CJs. I just did a search about brake lights and blinker switches. Thanks for letting me know and for the info!
