Combination of the axle, radiator fan, frame...its really more the axle - raising the front end and letting the axle droop as much as possible almost created the clearance. A little taller jack and/or the low clearance 90 degree drill head will probably solve the problem. I am still going to be concerned about getting the threads cut far enough into the hole, but I think its pretty doable.

OK , so this may add a little more clarity or confusion to what your doing but here goes...........1/4" x20 HeliCoil tap kit.....

On the left is the 1/4" x 20 Helicoil repair tap and on the right a 5/16x18 plug & bottom tap ............the Helicoil tap is a 3 flute and about .309 in diameter and has SAE 20 threads to match the 1/4" x 20 repair coil..................the 5/16x18 plug & bottom taps are.319 in diameter and both 4 flutes........and as you can now see the difference in each tapping depth....obviously Helicoil is making a special tap with it's own diameter and thread pitch for there kits......................

I thought I had some of those plain threaded inserts here that use a standard SAE thread , but I could not find that kit , might be over at the other shop or in the race trailer.......I'll take a look next time I'm down there..............I think those other inserts that I mentioned above are the way to go as you can take a basic off the shelf bottom tap or grind off a standard and get you where you need to be........hope this helps!

If you can lift it higher safely - pull the shackles off one end and the drive line - let it droop more. I can do it with my hoist - I just wrap the front bumper, pull mentioned items and lift the front about 4' in the air when I need to.

work in progress...have the heli-coil ready to go, but since it uses a unique sized tap that only comes in the traditional tapered version we've put this on pause to see if we can find the proper helicoil tap in a bottoming design, or whether we want to try to cut the tapered portion off of the tap, or whether we want to go with one of the other thread inserts that uses traditional sized tap threads which I can get in all types at my local hardware store. Went to Fruita for some MTBing last weekend and off to Moab this weekend, so haven't had time to look into this.
