My ‘71 with factory Dauntless is giving me grief. I can’t get it to stay running. I have a new fuel pump, new plugs, new wires new coil, new cap/rotor/points. When it fires it runs for about 30 seconds and then dies, with or without choke/throttle. I know it’s got spark and fuel but otherwise I’m kinda stumped. Same problem persisted before I changed everything. When I first got the Jeep it fired up and ran great. This just started about a year ago after it sat for about 6 months. Any suggestions would be amazing.

After it dies, immediately pull the top off the carb to see if it has fuel in the bowl.

It does sound like a float problem. If the bowl is empty after the engine dies, the float is likely stuck.

Just because it has a new fuel pump, doesn't mean it is good. New parts today can be a problem.

Line to tank is partially clogged or dirt from the tank in the line................gas cap may not be vented......try taking it off or loosen it while running.

Gravity feed (siphon) to the carb from a can on the cowl. It'll run like that, and test for blockage in the tank and lines. If you still have a problem, it's in the carburetor. Divide and conquer!

if you find it's getting fuel . it might be electrical . these jeep had a ballast resistor before the coil

You know how to hot wire a Jeep? Another easy test.

x2. You say "30 seconds" but if it actually dies when you release the key from the 'crank' position, then it could be the ballast resistor.

That's what I was thinking, ballast resistor. Maybe.

Does it fire right back up after it dies?

Fires while cranking the dies after release can be bad switch or broken wire.

Sounds a bit like clogged jets from our piss poor gasoline that turns to water after a period of time.

yeah id say probably float stuck or just gunk floating around in there. Take the top of the carb off and clean it out its easy to do without pulling the whole thing off.

SeaFoam often works wonders for carb crap.

Update. Sorry it took so long. The last time it ran well was a few months back when I made my final attempt to drive it into the garage and it died. I put 5 gallons of gas in it but all it would do is start, run a bit and then die. This time I ran a hose from the fuel pump to a gas can and it fired right up, ran for about two minutes and died, then fired right back up but didn’t seem interested in staying running. So probably clogged lines to the tank or sludge in it. As for running and dying, I popped the top off the carb and the float bowl is full. It’s outside and has straight pipes coming out each side direct from the manifold with no mufflers, so it’s loud and I have cranky neighbors, so no more tonight. I did already replace the filter and I did the ballast resistor when I replaced all the wiring. Carb was cleaned completely about 3 months ago.

I would check the plugs and see if they are sooty - maybe it is flooding out as it runs, possibly a leaky float valve in the carb.
