Has Zero Catalytic Or Muffler. Custom straight Pipe from Headers back . I cannot believe how Quiet this Runs ??? When warm, I'm getting a backfire in the pipe , on Deceleration . Have not found any exhaust leaks yet, but I do think I need to install a muffler of some Type . Any Ideas/ Knowledge/ experience/ and/or Opinions would be appreciated.

The turbo rotor takes the major noise out of the exhaust.

Drive it a bit to see if you can live with the noise level. These engines love a free flowing exhaust, and yes, the turbo definately "muffles" the exhaust sound to a great degree. It probably gets a bit loud when you get on it!
We need to see and hear more about this one!
I have most of an early Buick turbo system (carbed) from the late '70's.

Thanks Donny...... I am Just getting into it . Still have to work Full Time !
The one thing I noticed after my first run , was that on decell she detonated & Popped in the exhaust a bit ? It was born @ 4500 ' elevation & now she's on Lake Ontario @ ~ 500 ' above sea level. Acts likes possibly a Timing issue , but it runs by ECM ? I'l check for exhaust leaks next... I Dunno ?

Very original nice beautiful... but if it is too noisy you maybe are forbidden to drive ? on open roads.
Maybe it is difficult to drive it, too fast no good for curbs, CJ5 loves roll over.
But frankly it is superb. Color perfect.

Donny, I was thinking of a Glass Pak or Thrush. I may need some back pressure to stop the detonation on decell???? could I ask you of your thoughts towards this ? I dunno , yet.......

The first thing I would suggest is getting some heat protection between the firewall and that rear mounted turbo......It will get hot back there.

Looks to be an early 1984 +/- Buick turbo motor out of maybe a Riviera? , these early versions had the rear mounted Turbo , sequential Fuel Injection and wasted spark coil ignition..............way ahead of their time for sure...........only produced about a 180 HP...........Crankshaft , connecting rod and spun bearing issues were common due to detonation caused by the early ECM fuel & coil ignition systems...The original turbo radiused journal crankshafts are no longer available.....so take care of it & watch the oil pressure and change oil often............Neat little motors.

Join one of the Buick clubs and get yourself as much literature as you can find on keeping those little motors tuned & happy..

I don't know much about "newer" computer controlled turbo engines. Tarry's suggestion to get on the Buick turbo forums is a great idea.
Back in the day, the Corvair Spyder had the original turbo muffler that was copied by multitudes of aftermarket brands. The muffler, though free flowing, was the limit on how much boost they produced. You could get 2-3 lbs higher boost by completely removing the muffler.
Your popping on deceleration could be a rich mixture, but shouldn't be detonation. Detonation (pinging) typically happens under load from too much spark advance. The Buick turbo engines generally retarded the timing as boost increased, but that was the computer's job.
Check out the Buick forums for more expertise on you engine.

All I was doing is agreeing with Tarry99's suggestion in post#16. He gets the credit for sending you to the Buick forums! Besides that, he is really knowlegible and an outstanding fabricator.
I have always kept the idea of a turbo version of the Buick V6 in a Jeep since the Buick V6 is already a native engine starting in '66. I also looked at the later supercharged versions, but that configuration doesn't lend itself as well because they were transverse engines. I have a friend with a Buick Grand National, and used to work with a guy that had a GMC Typhoon, so those would be the ideal donors if one was looking at really building an over-the-top turbo'ed Jeep.
Your new gem is probably as close as its going to get!

tarry99... Thanks for your points. I just measured and I've got 9" from my firewall to the back edge of the Garrett M10(?) Turbo Cover. Is that far enough away . There has ~17,300 miles on this , since the paint & Build & the Firewall is very clean. I do have exhaust soot ( Black, Dry ) on the undersoood of my hood, just above the flex pipes . I'm workin' on getting more pics up , to go along with my Questions . I definitely will need & appreciate any help with tuning. She is running too rich right now . Thanks tarry99, for any time & Knowledge you can give me ...... Lockman
