So, If I gave you a giant block of steel, the size of a jeep, would you just remove all the extra until it was done? Think Michelangelo's David or Pieta.. He just removed the unnecessary bits, right?

That would be a lot of grinding wheels.

I love watching this build as much as Terry's! You ever get some time to do some Jeep events or runs in the PNW, let me know!

I got the front shock mounts finished today! :bananatool: They were a pain in the butt. The shocks are angled in at 5°, and the tubing they are mounted to angles back at 5°, so I had some subtle compound angles to deal with, while getting them to clear the headlights on one side and the spring buckets on the other.

I couldn't show everything in pictures, so I loaded a short walk-around video at the bottom. That shows how tight it is around the headlights.

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to keep something from warping when welding, it just does what it wants anyway. I had to bend the tubing back into place with the pipe bender. The holes were 1/4" off.

I took the coil springs out and dropped the frame down to under 1" of touching the axle. I set my shocks to have 1 1/2" of remaining travel. The shocks should never bottom out, even if the bumpstops fall off.

Here's a shot of the shock mount tacked in place. I welded everything but the top hoop, then wrapped and welded that last.

I like the curve. I know it's functional but man, the way it looks is just a pleasure to look at. Your work is stupendous. I enjoy the details. Keep them coming.

Is it a jeep or art or both?

But is it really a jeep? :D

Thanks guys. I'm really glad I was able to pull that off. I've been nervous about that shock placement for years.

One bit of a bummer... I threw the intercooler in there to check fitment, and it's a non-starter. It would need to go right up against the grill, and it doesn't fit between the headlight buckets. If I'm going to run a turbo, I'll either need to find a smaller one, or not run one.

Would a military grill buy you more space? The lights are somewhat smaller and you don't have a bucket to deal with.
I'm sure you've observed it but you can carve a bucket down to where all you need is the adjuster and spring connections.
    BTW....

I was wondering the same thing. The minimum spacing between the headlight openings on a MB/GPW grill is 24". The headlights are 5.7" OD and 4" overall depth. This would potentially gain you and additional 2 1/2" in width and 1" additional clearance behind the headlight work with. Headlight buckets are easily obtainable whether they be military or civilian.

I can get an aftermarket aluminum intercooler for under $200. I'm thinking that might be cheaper than a military grill. And chances are, the wider headlights would interfere with these shock mounts, and I'm not re-doing them! :D Thanks for the input.

Maybe I'll run a half-size intercooler and the other half run a small A/C condenser.

I'll install some air tanks to bottle the cold winter air, then I'll release it in the summer, and bottle the hot summer air to release in the winter.
