I hope to turn the key for the first time after a complete engine rebuild tomorrow...:sick:I feel kind of sick with worry.
Question: The Cam drives the oil pump and distributor... If I pull the Dist. and prime the pump all I need to do is slide the dist. back in so the key on the end of the shaft fits into the groove of the pump...no need to worry about the groove/keys position in regard to timing???
My brain says yes...but my worry wart wont stop thinking about it...how can the pump be turned if its locked into the cam by the gears???
I have noted the pump's groove position in case its necessary to refit the dist. in the exact same spot...but that leaves a lot of room for error

    Sorry, I'm freaking out :worry:

The Fhead/Lhead oil pump is gear driven from the cam. You cannot spin the oil pump like on GM style engines. The distributor is also keyed to go in the oil pump gear in only one orientation as well... The PO on my Head many years ago filed the distributor to go in either way....

Pull the coil plug wire and crank it over until your oil pressure gauge registers some pressure. Don't burn up your starter doing it though.

BTW, don't freak out. Its going to be ok. I built my Fhead in my living room 24 years ago.

Assuming you used assembly lube on all bearings and such?

I like to use a manual oil pressure gauge, at least for startup. Like 47V6 says pull the coil wire and crank it over till you see pressure.

I would go one step further . pull all spark plugs . that way engine will spin faster

Sorry about the freak out...lots of life stress to boot...THANKS for the replies. I will do as recommended, yes assembly lube was used....well I hope it was, I paid a pretty penny for a well respected mechanic to assemble this thing. and yes...I installed a manual oil pressure gauge...gonna take a chill pill and cool my jets etc
    Thanks again!
really not sure where I get my info from sometimes:D

I had a heck of a time building oil pressure after a rebuild :(

Spun that puppy over without the plugs for I don't know how long- nothing.

Pumped oil into the galleries- nothing.

I finally took the pump off & packed it full of vaseline- that worked.

Must pack the oil pump with vasoline!!! Read the service manual about all this too. The instructions will tell you what you need to know.

I won't say it shouldn't be done, but I've gotten oil pressure in 3 different engines without having to pack the pumps.

    Any secrets for this?

It takes a couple minutes to not wonder why there's no oil pressure. I have gotten many oil pumps to prime with no vasoline, but some didnt and I had to pull it.

No, I didn't do anything special. Maybe I got lucky and didn't know it at the time.

Pump worked great, pressure came up to @ 45 50 psi before I stopped watching it...and saw the gusher of oil spewing from the canister filter:censored:
had to shut it down...was purring like a kitten after the initial shudders and shakes...CRAP! Going to talk to the machinist this morning...this sucks!!!

not so sure how "good" the news is...the plan was to run and drive it for 20 minutes to harden the cam and etc...now im afraid the assembly lube has washed off and a restart will damage things...
I will ask the machinist in 3 hours or so...fingers crossed he says it wont be all that bad
