Upgrade the front seal to the one piece neoprene seal. Also agree with a new cam and lifters, stock or performance. Since you have the front cover off disassemble the oil pump, check for wear. If the pump cover is worn rebuild with the steel wear plate, available at TA performance or Rock ( it's a Melling part) Be sure to pack the pump with petroleum jelly. All this coming from the guy who's rebuilt 231 ran a total of 20 min before needing a rebuild again :schooled:

It all seems like good advice. But considering the source.....

I ordered new stock cam and lifters. This part wasn't hard at all once I got started.

Trying to keep it all together.

Then Last night Noah (73 cj5) stopped by with his friend Andrew and took the F-head back to Mississippi.
I let them do 95% of the work (for a free engine). Nice to meet Y'all Hope that thing isn't complete Junk.

Easy to see why these CJs went to a "high hood". This thing is like 4' tall!!

Much appreciated Scott. We had some bomb smoked chicken and zucchini before we started tearing it down. The CJ5 looked and sounded great. I finally got home at 4 am.

Engine oil looked clean. I’m going to oil the cylinders and turn it over and see if it’ll fire off. This one is getting the name “Hurricane Agnes” ;)

Finally got the sheet metal bent for the replacement of the edge of the windshield frame. I really like this part - making old junk usable again. I'm no expert and it's not close to prefect but it will work and look decent.

    This is the "before".

    Top edge was really bad

I buy one whenever they have them cheap. I then take apart and add grease to the workings and they run so much better.

Calling the windshield frame done for now. I did a coat of brush on rust converter. Putting it up in attic with the tailgate.

The hood is a real mess so I found a reproduction hood for 1/2 of Kaiser Willys price. Picking it up next weekend at N GA swap meet.

Next I’ll remove the fenders and get them cleaned up. Then on to the tub.

Your old hood looked pretty solid and straight. Oh yea, on the tub I saw some rot in the hat channel on the passenger side but besides that it looked solid...with the flashlight.

PO used it as a trampoline then put 1/4” of Bondo over half of it. It is solid as far as rust.

  12. Nah his old hood is total garbage and needs to be replaced.

Disclaimer: I'm the guy he's buying the new hood from. LOL It's a small world.

  13. If you're interested a buddy has a pair of Buick fenderwell headers he isn't going to be using and he'll be at the swap meet too.

Cool, it will be fun to meet another forum member. This 231 I bought has nice stock manifolds that I think will clear steering mods. I'll try to stick with that for now. I do need Buick V6 Power Steering bracket If you ever see one laying around.

Are Y'all bringing your Jeeps to the Swap Meet? I plan on trailering my CJ5.

  15. Hopefully I'll be bringing my beater 3A and I'm pretty sure he's bringing his stretched M38.

Oops. I said I was moving to the fenders but I forgot about this.

The fan shroud was pretty much all just rust. The radiator was poked a few times but the grill looks really good. Should only be a couple hours to get it cleaned and primed.

Please tell me that's the bottom of the grill. Because if its not I think you just unlocked some sort of a achievement medal . . .

I think Matt at 1/4 Ton Military up in north Georgia has NOS windshield top channels to finish the frame.
