What’s baffling me though is that when I put it in the air and spin the wheels they spin freely. It’s only when I put it on the ground it sounds like the shoe is pressing against the drum

Lift it up and pull/push on the tire in all directions. If there’s any play or clunking, the bearing is likely bad. It could be allowing enough play for the brakes to drag under weight. If that’s the case, it’s close to total failure.

I'm also basing my thought due to you saying you worked on the brakes. ITLKSEZ has a good point about the bearing. It very well could be the cause.

Braking didn’t have any effect on the sound

Put it up again to check for play and didn’t find any other than the little bit of fore and aft movement that you should have. There was a little bit of clunking

I did hear a sound that sounded a bit like the squeak though when I was checking for play on the passenger rear tire

Sound travels so maybe it's not the driver's side? Sure it's not a u-joint?

It’s a brand new cv driveshaft. How should I check it?

I was thinking maybe an old one needed replacing maybe that you hadn't caught yet. Wouldn't hurt to grease the new ones to see if it makes any difference.

So you've had the wheel up in the air twice now, and still haven't removed the tire and wheel and remove the drum for a quick inspection. Doesn't take but a couple minutes. Why keep guessing ?

So I pulled the drums and found.............

Nothing. Other than is being a little dirty it looked fine. On the inside edge of the drum it looked a little bronze? Is that normal?

You'd want to look for a shiny spot...metal on metal.
Maybe the drum hitting the backing plate etc.
Something that has to do with the wheel rotation that you described.

Doesn't seem to be anything noticeably rubbed on the shoes. How about the axle itself, have you rotated it to see if it's even slightly bent and rubbing something?

Yep. We spun it quite a bit and didn’t hear anything. The axle play is within the factory specifications
