I searched the TSM and archives without success. :study: My question, anyone know if the tracking width of the dana 44 rear and the dana 30 front axles are the same? (on my factory axles 74 cj5) Thanks in advance

From an old Pirate 4x4 thread. There seems to be some confusion on if and when the late CJ5 used a wide track axle. CJ5 narrow track? - Pirate4x4.Com : 4x4 and Off-Road Forum

"Early CJ5's were 48.44 and the Ramblers were 51.5. This is quite a bit of difference. While it is true he bolt can bolt it up. It would be 3" wider.
I always thought the term "wide track" started in 76 when the rear frame was widened and the springs were moved outward. Therefore, not all CJ5's are narrow track.

On CJ's the front D30's were all "narrow track" until the 1982 model year.
Starting in 1982 the CJ7's and CJ8's went to a "wide track" D30.
    narrow track D30 = 53"
    wide track D30 = 56"
The CJ5's all stayed at 53" width."

Ok guys I have a dumb question. Can someone please clarify the two different measurements in the highlighted post above. '' '72-83 CJ-5, frnt-51.5" rr-50" (so called- narrow track'' What does the frnt and the rr mean? Why the two seperate measurements? I know it must be simple, I just cannot see it right now. Thanks

Front and rear. The front is 1 1/2” wider than the rear.

I’ve come across that list a few times in my searches for different applications, and there are a few discrepancies/errors across the board.

The D30 gained 1 1/2” over the D27 in ‘72, and as far as I know, they didn’t change through the whole run of CJ5s.

I just measured the between the tire treads on my 3b to confirm (axles from a ‘74), and they are 1 1/2” wider in front.

This is in the 1974 TSM, page A-7. 51.5" front, 50.0" rear.

The differences could be in the way "front/rear tread" and "track width" are defined.

It is usual for the front track width of cars to be wider than the rear. This makes for better maneuverability and smaller turning circle. Some cars (J-trucks for example) are the exception. The J-truck and Utility Truck rear axles are wider than the front to allow a full 48" between the wheel houses in the bed.

Do the listed measurements refer to mounting surfaces? I assume they do as that is the only logical way to have an accurate measurement.

    Yes.
It’s usually referred to by “WMS” = wheel mounting surface
