What kind of engine you are using? My Jeep has a Chevy 4.3L with Herm's kit. It was a really tight fit. If you're not in too much of a hurry, I'm almost at the point where I can get some pics for you. I need to have some flats machined on my steering shaft and it'll be ready to install.

Thanks guys the pics help .I am using the stock 225 with a 231 manifold .The clearance is tight so I think I will add some u-joints to get around the manifold .I will post pics here and send to Herm .

Hello to everyone! I hope this post finds you well!

I'm reviving this thread (most of the old threads are missing pictures) because I'm having trouble lining-up the steering link from the base of the stock steering column to the steering box on my power steering kit from Herm. I have a 1971 CJ5 with a Dauntless V6 with a rear-dump exhaust manifold. I'd love to see some pictures and hear ideas about how others have completed this install.

    Thanks in advance!

I looked at doing g this swap on my 70 but the radiatior was right in the way... what did you do about the radiator?

I haven't re-installed my radiator yet, but before I removed it, (to my eye) the radiator looked like it would not have a clearance problem. With that said, I do have an aftermarket aluminum radiator with the outlet on the passenger side.

Not a V6 but I have this on my F134. I did need to adjust my radiator a few inches higher. I also overheated on my first real road run with the steering hooked up. Could have been a few things that caused it, but noteworthy either way.

Very interesting topic I’m up in the air between herms kit and advance adapters. I have the 225 my big fear is not being able to get the head bolts out to install the headers.

Here is mine with a 4.3 v6 in a 58 CJ5. It’s tight no doubt, but it fits! I notched the lower “lip” of the front cross member to scoot it forward as much as possible. Lilbuff63,

Thank you very much for posting your pictures! Those are the only pictures I've seen of the actual steering links between the steering wheel shaft and the box. Did you use the original steering wheel shaft or something else? Did you use 3 u-joints or 2 u-joints?

    Thanks again!

Does it get welded to the frame after you are happy with the position or is it strictly bolt on ? TJ

Mine is real close to the fuel pump but 3000 miles and no issues.

I used 2 bolts to attach instead of one as designed.

Fenderwell headers solve all the clearance issues. Good mufflers solve the header issues.

    Hey Scott,

    Thanks for the pictures!

Did you use the original steering post/rod? Did you have clearance problems with the stock exhaust manifold? If so, how did you work it out? Did you add welding to Herm's bracket? What fender-exit headers did you use, and where did you get them? Do you have any pictures of the link at base of the steering column/rod?

    Thanks again!

I used the original steering shaft just cut off the worm gear and shortened to just beyond the firewall. It is very close to the original position on the firewall as well. Herm has the kit with the new (lower) steering shaft and U-Joints. The Headers are from Advance Adapters. I never did try the stock manifolds as it is well discussed on this site the clearance issues.

    Scott,

That's the money shot!! Thank you!!

It looks like I'm going to have to go the header route like you did. I just don't see a practical way to get around the cast iron rear dump manifold. I also noticed my fan is not going to clear the steering box. I'm thinking about replacing it with an electric fan to solve that problem. Did you have a fan clearance problem, if so, how did you solve that problem?

    Thanks again!!

Yes, like buildflycrash said, cut the worm gear off the existing shaft. You will let Herm know what splines you have on your steering box (36 for mine I think) and he will send you the u-joints, collapsing steering shaft, shaft support through floor board, and the bracket with hardware. I used only two u-joints.

No welding, you have to be able to remove the bracket with steering box attached when replacing.

Really good to see the pictures. I see that some severe angles work with the u joints. Has anyone figured out a way do to it with the F134?

I didn’t have any issues with the fan. The radiator did sit on top of the steering gear so I bumped it with a BFH a couple times.
