    So how many of you, with odd-fire HEI, have the cap terminal pointed towards the firewall, like the author of the video insists is the only right way?!
    Mine points towards the battery & passenger fender. That's how most on this site are arranged (I think).
    I agree that one can NOT reposition the cap relative to the distributor body, but most odd-fire instructions indicate there are THREE possible operating positions for the distributor, with a properly fastened cap.

    After watching the video I had to go out and check mine. I do not have #1 on the post he says it has to be.
    I do appreciate the way he broke down the layout.

    Agreed. I have the distributor housing oriented properly with the vacuum advance pointed forward, but my number one is 2 terminals down from the "proper" spot. The rotor is clocked to match and the Jeep runs great:

    I'm not sure why the video creator had an issue with that unless he didn't match the rotor to the new number one position well. That said, the rest of the video is good.

    While I don’t have an HEI distributor my Mallory does have the Number 1 wire specifically marked on the cap and thus has to be installed fairly specific.

    Here is the way I do it:
    • My number one post is the same as his - you can see it in many threads where I have posted a picture of it.
    • Its only relative to the post position on the body as the tab for the cap makes this spot the one to use.
    • You can clock the body ANY WAY you want - just keep the post one and TDC lined up with the rotor. Stab it in while making the slot for the pump line up... IE the vacuum can can point to the radiator or firewall as long as the body and cap line up to the proper number one.
    • IF you use ANOTHER ODD POST for NUMBER ONE - you run the risk of other positions with shorter posts at their firing position firing at the WRONG time. This is due to the longer tines inside the cap being able to fire any where along it and spark - but the short one only has that ONE place to fire and connect.
    • IF you use and EVEN POST - YOU ARE HOSED on an ODD FIRE HEI - it just won't work right, no matter what you do until you get the odd - even pattern worked out.

    Mark your cap with a couple lines that match the way the shaft needs to be set. Makes lining it up Lots easier.
