2WD low is like having the correct tool for the job, think hub puller vs not having one. I've had a 2WD low option in my jeeps for nearly 30 years and use it quite often as I'm in 2WD low range on the trail most of the time till I need 4WD for an obstacle.

I use 2 low quite a bit. Mostly maneuvering the little army trailer in the yard or driveway. I'm in town and everything is tight.

I use 2 low often. Not for pulling power, but because I can use all three gears of the T14 at lower speeds (actually 6 with OD). And can steer it. A day on the trail my GPS says average speed 13 MPH. In high I'd never get out of 1st gear. It keeps me in the power band.

Interesting. The Intermediates have an easy 2WD low (not marked, but it's there), and I can't think of any time I've intentionally selected it.

I wish my Wrangler had 2 low. There are frequently times I'm on pavement and want to maneuver slower than 1st high range permits without a lot of clutch slipping.
For my Willys I have locking hubs so it's not an issue.

I had 91 Toyota pickup that would do this just fine, it has manual Toyota manual hubs. My Dodge pickup will not do this hubs make a popping sound, I have not tried to figure out the cause. Hubs are Warn with Dana 60. My jeep I have never tried. My current Toyota has automatic hubs thus you cannot attempt.

And you just discovered where my knowledge of “new” jeeps ends. Didn’t know that. :D

I use 2 low around the house when moving things around. If a 4k rpm clutch dump with a truck behind me doesn't bust something I'm not worried, not that I was worried before then. Never heard of using 2wd low range might break something. Seems far fetched to me.

There's a way to get 2WD low in the TJ - but seems like it was 100's of dollars and required tcase removal. I'd like it for moving my trailer, but not that much.

I use 2wd low range about every 4 months for a 1/2 mile or so, just to keep the front end gears lubed.. [don't have to lock in the hubs that way]

I use 2wd low all the time too. 1st on a t14/3.73 V6 Jeep just isn't low enough for putting around. 4wd makes it hard to turn tight.

Terralow makes a kit. About 300 dollars and requires splitting the case. Gotta replace the low range shift fork and the shift mode selector.

Years ago I pulled the interlock pill out of the Dana 18 in a Willys pickup that I had.
I used 2WD low a bit, the one time I needed it I was pulling a heavy wooden boat on a trailer out of a bunch of brush, I started in 4 low, then shifted out of 4WD before I got the tires on the pavement.
Once it was it moving good I shifted it into high and just kept it moving.

    That there is Mall rated.

Wasn't the surry gala a DJ with a d18 transfercase. it had low range but was only 2wd due to the intent to just poke around resorts.

I’ll tell that to past customers who broke the gears in their transfer case or in some case me the case itself in half doing just what you describe. But don’t be worried because you say it is farfetched and it hasn’t happened to you.

You don't know me well... See I just don't care and it's as simple as that.
So what's the difference between being in low range vs a gearset that produces said low range ratio without being in low range?

Double the torque compounding double the load if you have a 2-1 low range. Means double the torque on the components. Basic mechanical advantage I learned in jr high, high school, and further.
But hey, if you simply don’t care, no problem for me. I’ve made lots of money fixing stuff for people that simply don’t care, or at least selling them replacement parts.
Your vehicle, your choice. No skin off my nose.
