so, I've decided to get a locker for my axle for the anticipated ECJ5 meet and greet and wheel this year.
below is what i ordered from East Coast Gear supply. what else will i need? inner and outer axle seals?
axle is a one piece, flanged offset, 30 spline
that should just about cover it.

also, the more i think about it, it would be the right time for a geo disk brake conversion. ive got all of the parts on hand, waiting for a home, but i can always buy more for the FC when that time comes. i mean, the axles are out....not much more work at this point to mount the new hardware.

There is a "master kit" available with seals, shims and anything else you may need for the install. A limited slip is not a locker however it is much better than open.

To be technical, that's not a "locker", it's a limited slip. It has resistance to the wheels turning different speeds (that increases with load), but it will never lock up.

As others said, better than nothing, but be prepared to be underwhelmed offroad. They are great on road differentials, but don’t seem to hook up all that well if tires are lifted. Power-Lok’s are much better limited slips. Had a buddy with a power-lok in the front and a true-track in the rear. The front kept pulling both wheels and the rear acted like an open differential once it was really needed. YMMV.

Yeah, the worm gear Gleason style diffs can only put as much torque to the loaded wheel as it can the unloaded wheel. It's essentially an open diff when one wheel is in the air. Applying the brakes to load the unloaded wheel can help. Cutting brakes would be even better.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Have the same set-up as you.
    You'll do just fine.

I am running probably the last D44 Gleasen in existence. If one wheel is off the ground it acts like an open diff. Once I touch the brake the gears lock in the housing and the wheel on the ground will carry the Jeep and jack across the floor.
Tru trac's are a very similar design and do sterling service. While they aren't rebuildable and will eventually wear out. they are quite sturdy and are all but invisible onroad.

I'm in the middle of exactly this. Had a hell of a time getting a good pattern with the used gear. [IMG] [IMG]

This isn't the good pattern but I was done! by the time I finished and didn't take a picture. For disc brakes I went with Brennans Electronic E brake disc brake kit so I could delete the d18 e brake.
The Limited slip isn't as good as a locker but it's a lot better then an open diff and gives you good street manners. I chose a locker for the front and with the rear LSD it's a great set up on the trail with out the binding you get with 2 lockers and still drives great on the road.

If you need a set of set up bearings let me know they saved me a lot of head ache on set up.

I'm gonna disagree a bit with this. I have a personal hatred for the trac lok. They are, in my opinion, trash and have rightly earned that moniker. I've seen literally dozens of them fail.
The keepers fall out, clutches disintegrate, the center pin holes wallow, and the pins fall out. All of the above resulted in catastrophic differential failure.
The powr lok is an excellent clutch pack unit and if I were going for a rebuildable LS, I would spring for that unit.
OMHO an open diff is a better unit than the trac lok.
    Rant off.............

On paper I like the worm gear style on the rear. Concept being you don't spin out the wheel with grip and loose lateral stability.

I have a true trac in my F 150 2wd I use it for road work and towing a boat and other trailers. It see a limited amount of back roads w/ minor trail riding. I am very pleased with it's performance!!!

My CJ2A has ARB lockers front and rear, nothing like that for mobility!!!

RATTYFLATTY I think you need a little more throttle

Quite possible, As I broke mine doing dumb stuff on pavement a few years back. I did however find a used one to purchase but upon installing it it would screech horribly when cornering. If someone has any ideas message me. Not trying to highjack just saying I would run one again.

A 27A Gleason? Man, had I searched all over and couldn't find a unit for my front end. I installed my first one in 84 after my stock trac lok blew (the beginning of my disgust for that unit). I replaced it in the early 90's when I changed gear ratios. At that time I looked all over and couldn't find a corresponding unit for the front.
I settled with a powr lok and have been very happy with it.

That's basically all we have here in Wisconsin. I'm not worried about a rear tire in the air.
