And I got a free Dauntless.

I was mostly hoping for PS and alternator brackets. This definitely looks broken.

I’m going to strip it down and maybe have it rebuilt. I already have a 231 for the 3B but I do like these Dauntless’.

Hmm, valve covers and HEI would make me investigate further, if you have not already.

I sprayed a bunch of blaster around it and left it hanging for the night.

That's almost certainly a 231. HEI, valve covers, the angle of the valve cover mounting surface on the head, EGR intake, large bore 2GC, ...etc. With those heads, it's probably a 77+. It could be an even fire.

I bet the alternator bracket could be saved by rebuilding the broken section with a tig welder. I would be happy to give it a shot.

Even fire 231, freeze plug in end of head. If it wasn't left open in the weather, might not need rebuilt?

Yes that is a 231 even fire.

If you want an Odd Fire 225 I have one ready to build, all the machine work is done for the block, heads, crank, and rods. It did have to be bored 0.40 over, and the crank turned 0.30 under, but there are no cracks. I was planning to build this 225 engine for my CJ5, but those plans have changed. I would sell it for the machine shop charges, which is something you would have to pay for anyway to rebuild that 231.

All the work was done by a reputable machine shop I, and all my hot rodding buddies have used for many years. I am retired and have time for a road trip half way if you are interested.

A lot of good parts on that 231. That forward dump manifold is good for a Jeep install if it isn't cracked and it looks like it has the 2G carburetor instead of the later DualJet on a 231 I have out of a 85 Buick. The 2G would be my preference between the two.

I found one of those cast alternator brackets for the 231 I have brand new on Ebay, so someone is making them. I am going to use the 231 in a flat fender I am building, and since I have money invested was going to hold onto the 225 until I found a Jeep to put it in, but I really have enough projects started already so may never get to a point to use it.

This might be a good option for me. I'll message you now.
The forward dump manifold is what tricked me to thinking it was a Dauntless. I haven't seen that on anything except a Dauntless in a CJ.

Not necessarily. Early '77 engines have those heads but are still odd fire. Scott's could be either.

How do I know? I have one in my '69 Jeep. Same heads. Odd fire:

If it's even fire, it's a good candidate for Fuel injection without needing a crank trigger.

bingo...I think there is a lot to like about an even fire 231 as a replacement for 225...or if your going for a swap into a FF...

If I learn something everyday I still won't end up knowing enough because at my age I also forget a lot of things.

I like the rumbling sound of the odd fire engines and I have no problems with carburetors or a points distributor as long as I can get good parts. Especially like the 2G carburetors, those things will probably run upside down.

Probably the easiest way to tell is pulling the oil pan and looking at the crank shaft.

An odd-fire will have mated rod journals like this:

An even fire will have offset rod journals like this:

It should be pretty obvious even with the rods connected.

If yours still had the distributor cap you could tell from that.
