Update. Moved over to the campground for a few days. I was waiting to pull the head because I knew we had to tow the Jeep down a dirt road to the campground. I put the oil pan back on with 4 bolts and the intake with 2 bolts.

    Here’s the head off.

The package from Jackdog with the piston and valve arrived within 5min of me getting the old piston out.

The FLAPS had a piston ring compressor for loan/rent. So this went in rather painlessly.

    Mint!!

Good progress! What did you do about the valve seat? Wasn't in pretty mangled?

Don’t know if anyone mentioned checking/cleaning the oil pump pick up screen before you bolt the oil pan back up. Tap the top of the valve with a hammer before you bolt the head back onto the block, it’s a quick way to check that the keepers are seated. Stand the head on its side while doing it, if the head is face down on a surface it could bend a valve.
Great job, this trip is going make for some great stories in years to come.

I have a little grinding stone on a cordless drill. Tried to just hit the high spots. It’s going to have lots of blow-by.
I removed the pickup and a little tray/pan above it. Cleaned both well.

I have run with worse. It won't be the fastest rig out there, but no shame in coming in last with this kind of handicap.

Later model Buick 231 "Even Fire" engines are plentiful and pretty cheap.

I got it back together and it ran. I have a video uploading now but it is very slow. It wasn’t warmed up and it ran pretty rough. The damaged right side is definitely louder than the left. I’ll get the fenders back on tomorrow and drive around a little. I’ll re-torque the head bolts and change the brand new oil. In a day or two.

Probably don't need to say it but, remember to change the filter with the oil.
