Help Me ID My CJ6

The rusted out windshield frame had a rather new electric wiper motor which I attempted to install on the new frame when I got it a few years ago. It wouldn't fit, but I couldn't remember exactly why. I returned to the scene of the crime today: with the shaft protruding through the hole, the motor body hits either the rubber windshield gasket or the frame header, depending on which way I orient it, and won't seat against the frame panel. I realize it's an aftermarket unit, but it fit the old frame but not the new one. What gives?

Every photo shows the windshield folded down, so I can't see what you have. The original frame had the glass with a straight top edge and top mounted wipers. Around '68, they went with a curved top piece of glass with a better view out the top. When this change was made, they mounted the electric wiper motor outside on the left below the glass.

X 2 on the curved glass, sounds like you have that. Can you post a picture of the frame?

Someone with a verifed 65, 66, or 67 non diesel CJ-6 probably needs to post and tell us where their serial lies to be able to get close on when this one was made. It's a game of over/under at this point. Too many things have been swapped on this one to tell us what it is by details.

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but it's the straight glass, and the w/s frame has provision for the top mounted wipers. See the attached photos.
I hope someone can verify my measurements from the bottom edge of the w/s frame: 4" to the center of the w/s lower gasket lock bead, 17 1/2" to the center of the upper lock bead, 21" overall height. Note the w/s frame bottom gasket is not installed.

And what's with these brackets on the inside of the tailgate?

Thats the proper windshield frame for a pre-68-ish CJ. The correct wipers should mount in the existing holes, as well as the wiper stand-offs, latches, etc.
Those tailgates were originally from an M38 from around 1951/52. Those reinforcements are for the jerry can and spare tire brackets. The gates were bolted (inoperable) in their original application. If the holes are not drilled through for the outer brackets, it could be an old-stock replacement gate.

Those standoffs are something that are significant part that needs to be included. I ended up using plastic bushing from the hardware store to get the correct distance from the frame to the wiper motor. I know some have shortened the shaft and made it work with aftermarket wiper motors.

Yes, my w/s frame has all those points. I have cobbled together an adjustment system to verify the dimensions for spacers, which I can make on the lathe. Are these the "stand-offs" you refer to? Or are you referring to the "stirrups" that straddle the wipers and keep the w/s up off the hood when folded? wiper motor 1.jpg wiper motor 2.jpg

So, you installed spacers between the wiper motor and the w/s frame in order to get the blades to contact the w/s? OE frame and motor? Would the motor physically fit without the spacers?
See my photos in the previous post 29.

Ah, thx! This Jeep gets more interesting with every passing day. BTW, no holes in the tailgate. tailgate 4.jpg

Might take a look at the rear body mounts. Looks like the body is sitting on the frame.

I have a 66 CJ6. The last five of my serial are in the low 31000 range.

So mine is 3500 units older than yours. Seems like a stretch (pun intended) that they made that many in one year. And that assumes mine was made on the first day of the model year in '65 and yours on the last day in '66. 10 every day, more or less. Maybe mine's really a '65.

Maybe the pics will explain better. These were factory electrics on a 67. I disassembled to paint and lost a couple of spacers.

Thats an aftermarket tailgate. It lacks a few details under the right upper edge that tells me that. Except the front fenders (side maker lights), your Jeep appears to be all correct for an early '66 model. The snorkel cutout was discontinued fairly early in the '66 model year. My '66 CJ5 has one, but most '66s don't. You are lacking the "stirrups" as you call them for the wiper arms. These protect the hood when the windshield is folded down. The should also be a spring-loaded catch dead center between the wipers that works with a tall u-bracket/footman loop on the hood as a stay when the hood is raised against the windshield frame.

Yes, I am missing the stirrups, or stand-offs. Walck's has 'em. The tall u-bracket is on the hood, and I rescued the latch from the old w/s frame, but the spring has rusted away. I've not seen a replacement spring anywhere, nor a complete latch, for that matter. I'll prolly have to fab something, or maybe it will work OK w/o the spring.

That spring and latch was also used on the floor to latch the passenger seat on the last year or two of the ECJ5. WTB here will probably get you one.

I love that sort of ingenuity!

Since my previous post yesterday I have found a couple of them on military Jeep forums (fora?) listed for the M38A1.
I'm willing to bet the $25 that it's the same part, but would feel better with some confirmation.
    Meanwhile I'll post on WTB.
