Thanks for the tutorial... I'll probably have to deal with this at some point. You are making me want to add an OD to the 465/18 combo....it really could use the OD for highway cruising, but just don't think it's in the budget right now.

Got the OD linkage made up tonight.

I had some 1/2" square .060 wall tubing kicking around. Should be light and stiff, but I needed a better interface for the pin to the shifter.

    Notched the tubing:

Welded in a piece of 3/16" stock:

    Ground to look pretty:

    It fits well:

I wanted the linkage to be adjustable because I'm not sure where the handle will end up relative to the dash yet. For the back end I bent a piece of 3/16" bar stock, drilled a hole for the pin, and welded it to a long joiner nut:

I miter cut and welded the main linkage to drop it down and to the right after the transfercase shift tower. Then I welded a chunk of 3/8" redi-rod in the end of it:

It feels plenty strong and seems to work well.

    OD disengaged:

Looks pretty sweet - just to ask, do you find it easier to work with the square tubing as opposed to round when piecing and welding this together?

For this particular thing, round would have probably been easier if I had it. I find sqaure tubing really convenient for building square things but less so when building things like this with funny angles.

I thought about doing gussets on the bends but it feels plenty strong and stiff without.

thanks - I was just wondering if maybe I was missing some little trick that makes things like this with funny angles in different planes easier. As you probably know, herm sells pre-fabbed shifter kits for various set-ups - but what fun is that - and they are pricey of course, and guess there is always some chance it still needs some 'finagling' to get it to work just right.

Part of this whole Jeep project is learning how to fab things. Since I've got the tools and some scrap laying around I should make it myself.

My pre-fabed shifter from Herm wasn't even strong enough to shift the overdrive. I had to reinforce it.

This is my version of that. 1/2" 6061 rod, 1/2 x 2" bar stock for the shifter.

Might want to revisit that for the bracket on the tranny... I built one like that for an SM465 install and had a person 'slide/fall' into the shifter and it bent the bracket. We were having fun in a river with large rocks at the time :D

I was planning on adding a side gusset, but it's so strong as is I can't bend it. So whatever. We'll see if I need to beef it up down the road.

I had to find the bench. This is what it looked like from the last couple of projects:

After that, I tore into the overdrive to see what I've got:

I already knew I had rusty teeth on the bowl gear and ordered another back in january:

I hadn't dug too far into the rest of it yet. Shift fork slide shows some corrosion but will cleanup up with Scotch-Brite:

    The detent spring is busted:

All the torrington thrust bearings look good, but the bearing surface on the planetary hub doesn't look great. It would probably last a while as is, but since I'm already into it for a new bowl gear, I might as well replace this too:

I pulled apart the main shaft to inspect the bearings. I thought I was pretty clever using the shift collar to keep the shaft from turning while removing the nut:

The large ball beaing feels good:

The gear looks good and the bearing race area on the shaft looks good:

The bearing itself looks and feels good:

I sent Advance Adapters money for a New planetary assembly, detent ball, detent spring, and an OD shift boot. That should make it work like new.

Hopefully they have it all in stock. Their website doesn't indicate one way or the other. In the meanwhile I have a lot of cleaning to do.

Was out of town all weekend and will be out of town again next weekend. It's hard to find time to get even simple things done.

Advance Adapters says my parts will ship in mid December, so there's not a huge hurry on the overdrive.

I did finished cleaning things up and scraping gaskets:

I noticed the shift collar and the mating static spline have ridges created by wear:

They are too hard for a hand file to do much. I'm afraid of slipping and damaging stuff with the die grinder so I'll use a sanding drum on the low power Dremel tool to smooth these out.

In the meanwhile, I should stop procrastinating on pulling the Ross box out of the '69 and get that rebuilt.

    Ground all the burrs off:

It's 39 degrees in the shop and I didn't feel like dragging out the kerosene heater, so that's it for the night. In a couple weeks we should have a full-on propane furnance fully functional. That will make life much nicer.

I'm glad you enjoy the write ups.

No progress on this Jeep lately. The OD parts are back ordered to the end of January now. I think I'll start the transmission install soon without a functional Overdrive. I have the envelope needed to make sure it and the shifter fit and I can run without the OD until the parts show up.

I did pick up some parts today for the D44 front axle build.
