I'm looking for experiences, opinions and inputs on installing 2.46 low gears in a dana 20 transfercase.

The CJ5 is being assembled out of three piles of parts. I've decided, but not limited to a GM 4.3l tbi, trans to be determined, dana 20, dana 30, dana 44, glass tub, 3.73 gears, 33 bfg all terrains. Mild trail use

    Thanx, Ron

Sm465 for transmission is nice becauseyou can say "I got an 87 k20 with a 4.3 and sm465" to the parts guy. It'll do 2.46 dana 18 gears with the bronco rear output slider. It might need a little burr massage on the case but nothing extreme.

That combination is what jpet ran for a long time and what Steve's 71 was headed.

The unobtainable Bronco gear is being reproduced now. Check with Bronco parts suppliers.

Don't know if this is useful or not. Facebook- "Dana 20" has a low gear set.

Haven't ruled those out, but again (when I listen to the rite voice) research save me money. I thank yall for your inputs. Ron.

Terra 3.15’s will be a tad noisier than Spicer 2.46 gears.

Perhaps. But in a D20 where there isn't any loading in 2x4 high, I wouldn't think there would be a notable difference in regular driving. In low range probably not a big issue either because of all the rest of the ambient contributions. Going from 2.46 to 3.15:1 doesn't sound like much but it does make a big difference. I would do Tera Lows again. Maybe Herma Lows now?
