Gas can on the back is better than inside the vehicle under the driver seat.

 

I prefer my gas tank between my legs.

Some might argue that on the back it is much more vulnerable to impact and rupture.

Can anyone document how many, if any, casualties can be attributed reliably and specifically due to underseat tanks?

 

I didn't intend to start an argument but yes that data is out there in a lengthy NTSB report. The exterior fuel can is only a state level restriction.
The ideal solution is to have a half cab with rear tank and gas cans in the bed.

 

No argument intended. But I know a number of similar beliefs that really don't have objective data, are taken out of a relative context, or were based on isolated examples.

When my Harley was almost new, I got a recall regarding possible fuel tank rupture in a "high speed frontal collision." In a high speed frontal collision on a Harley, I doubt if that will be my first concern.

 

Not at the moment, it would be on a research database like ebscohost. Years ago in college I had access and did a report on the 1st gen caravan rear seat ejections. the fuel tanks were another topic I was interested in but the rear seat was much easier due to it being one model.

 

I'd be much more worried about a gascan on the back. Even a triv ial rear end collision would result in a fuel spill.

 

Will have to see what Ralph Nader has to say on the subject.

Maybe. After 35 years attending motor vehicle accidents with the Fire Rescue, it is my opinion that Nader has saved literally millions of lives. More than any other living human in my lifetime, I'd guess.

When I was a kid my grandparent's car had no seatbelts and a steel dashboard.

Last week I was with a family of four who drove head-on into a large tree at about 70mph. The worst injury was a broken collar bone. Before Nader it would have been four fatalities, no question.

 

Safety items were coming, maybe not as fast as some would like, but they were still coming.
Still doesn't change the fact that he is a wingnut.
