Help With Truetrac For Full Floating Dana 44

I am currently converting my 2 piece Dana 44 to a full floating axle. I finally have gathered up all of the parts and thought that I was ready to assemble it but have run into a snag. The Eaton Detroit Truetrac that I have (part # 914A590) looks to be correct except for the ID of the carrier bearings are bigger than the ID of the original carrier. I am not sure if I need a different set of carrier bearings or if I have the wrong locker. I was just hoping one of you fellers have ran into this and could lead me in the right direction.

Sounds like you have a 30 spline locker and 19spline housing (center casting and tubes)
Unfortunately they are different but there might be a magic bearing to make it work.

That is exactly what I have. I know guys smarter than me have done this but would really like to know what bearing they used.

It doesn't appear they make a 19spline Truetrac. You'll have to punt.

I have 30 spline Truetrac and 30 spline axles. My only problem is finding carrier bearings to fit the Truetrac. I know it can be done just not sure what bearing to use.

Any D44 30 spline carrier bearings will work. They had to increase the ID to accommodate the larger 30 spline axles. The outside diameter stayed the same.

Ah see that now my mind skipped after reading 2 piece. What Fireball said. Probably easiest to look up pn for the 72-75 centered flanged.

I suspect those bearings are the same used for the ARB 30 spline carriers for the older D44 housings.

Check the dimensions on these: LM104949/LM104912

A diff install kit and bearings for a standard dana 44 30 spline carrier should work in the 19 spline housing. The stock r&p will fit the 30 spline carrier. The only other difference i can think of is if you do need new gears, then the pinion yoke would need to be replaced because the pinion spline count is different on newer gears.

I am reusing the R&P and have located a set of bearings. The only thing I have left to figure out is what size axle seal I need. The 30 spline case took inner seals but my 19 spline case is only machined for outer axle seals. Sooo I have to find a seal that fits into my housing and onto my new 30 spline axles. The joys of Jeeping. :bananatool:

Or you can use Seals-it axle tube seals. They do work. https://sealsit.com/product/economy-axle-seal/

What you need is going to depend on the axle shafts. On my 3B project, I installed one pair just outside the carrier bearing caps and a second set bridges the inside of the spindles and the axle tube. Both axle seal surfaces were turned and polished. Some of that build is here: http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/106011/page-9

If your full float shafts are polished at the stock seal location, just get on SKF or National's web sites and look up the one that fits.

Which axle shafts are you using for this? Hopefully not Herm's 30 spline. I don't think Herm's versions are any stronger than the stock 19 spline with that built-in fail point at the root of the splines.

My shafts are polished but none of the seals are quite the right size. I will look into the Seal-it seals.

Unfortunately I am using Herms axles but should be ok. I am very light footed and have never broken a stock axle Even when I ran 36" tires.

I always use (application-'73 K20) dana 44 front inner axle seals, but put them inside the outer tube, just inside the spindle.
