I have every thing to mount a snow plow except for the plow Blade itself. Ive been looking for something sheep but no luck. So got to wondering about taking a 55 drum and spliting it then reinforcing it with some heavy angle top and bottom. What do yall think?

55 gal. drums are actually very thin. I think I would build one using 1/8 or 3/16 sheet. Have it rolled at a machine shop. Then go to your county or state road and bridge guys and see if they have any grader blade shins that they have taken off. Those may have a little slope to them, but for a snow plow would be fine.

Can't just find a 3 pt blade and modify it for your needs. I'd think you'd see some bargains to be had where you work that someone had sheared the adjustment base off and the blade in all that is left that's usable.

Jason I vote to have one made. 55gal drums are thin and I have not seen a metal one in a long time, all plastic now :(

    Grinsha minimally sufficient

Look for a couple old hot water heater tanks. My dad has made a couple snowpolw blades out of them.
Sorry no pics of the blades.

I am a little surprised you can't find a used one cheap. I scored a complete 4 way for mine for $400. We get around 300" of snow a year so snow plows are pretty plentiful in the 7'6" or 8' versions. 6' a little harder to come buy but still available.

I would think that about anything that you cobble together isn't going to hold up ot much. Depends on how much your wanting to push.... With as much as 4' of snow overnight here the plows really take a beating. The water heater sounds like a cool idea, or one of the old big water tanks they used to put in old houses.

Yeh we don't have much use for plows around here. And where Jason lives there is even fewer times you need it. So with little use they are hard to find.

You might be surprised. I pushed quite a bit of snow with a blade cobbled up from a garden tractor blade.

    Video, even.

Granted, not 4' - but 12-16" on a couple of occasions.

    Sledgehammer Sure, I'll try it

I've got one I'd like to get rid of. It is about JEEP width and has a cutting blade on it (for dirt) It comes complete with lift and all the bracing. Power up, gravity down and pin it at what angle you want. It is is good shape. PM me if interested. It may be a lot more than you want since you have all but the blade.

I like the looks of that. I don't think I would call that cobbled... it is after all an actual blade. The smaller blade is great for a jeep. That would handle our heavy snow I would think... We don't get the 4' snowfalls very often :( 12 to 16" very common tho... I live about a mile off lake superior....

    my setup;

A blade, but much lighterwieght than a typical plow blade. I could lift the whole blade/lift assemlby and move it around - wieght wise it was fine but a bit ungainly from the shape. I was thinking it'd probably be about the same weight as what Jason was looking to fab.

I'm 6 miles from Lake MI here - and it did well enough. The biggest handicap was no "power down" - so some piles of snow took several swipes to remove. At point point I was thinking about adding some cement blocks on the top just to improve the scraping action.

    spud Nope..it's not finished!

x2. Go to the landfill in your area and grab one. They make good blades. Then find some cutting edge at a heavy equipment shop.:smash: You can do it!!!

What about two lawn tractor blades mounted end to end? That would make a great plow.

I guess its easier to find plows in the snow belt. I got a Myers set up for free. Its 7.5', so I'm planning on cutting it down 6" on each side. Hope I get to it before the white stuff flows.

I got the old blade from my 60 pickup here for free if you want to take a trip. I also have a whole meyers CJ5 setup but I'd want some $$$ for that.
