Xfer case and Xmission oil

I did a search on this but was not able to come up with much. Please let me know if I have missed something.

I know the tranny and xfer share oil, but this is driving me crazy. My xfer case is always over full and my tranny is always low. Is this normal.

I do have a leak that I thougght was over flow, but it's to the point now that I am losing two to three ounces of 80/90 wt every day. I cannot ID a specific leak spot, but everything seem dry above the speedo connection on the xfer case. The tranny is also dry.

Since I have resealed and gasketed the xfer twice I am at a loss. Are there places where CJs commonly leak? Maybe around the shim pack?

It has taken six months to get to this point. it Did not leak after the last gasket/seal replacement on the xfer. It has gotten worse with use.

I have a ford toploader transmission mated to a D18 T/C and mine does the exact same thing. Both are newly rebuilt. I've driven it a lot that way and so far no problem. T/C is just too full!

yes. the oil flows out of the tranny into the transfer. some law of physics about liquids wanting to be level all the time or something. you could use a lot of permatex form a gasket on the output splines, but it will always leak some.

Remember that years ago oil leaks were not a big deal.

Thanks guys. I am just too used to the military standard of if there is a drop of oil on the ground then that is a class III leak and the vehicle is out of service until it's fixed.

Guess I'll just keep fiddlin' with it and keep an extra gallon of 80/90 wt in the gear box.

However, it is nice to know that this is a common problem. I wont let it keep me up nights ---- any more R)

The "little square of shag carpet glued on top of the skidplate trick" will help keep the garage floor clean until you find the culprit...

Thanks Steve, but I'm really a proponent of drip cans chained to the vehicle so they don't disappear :)

You mean like back in the 80's when we had to have the wheel chocks chained to EVERYTHING with wheels?

Just a thought Russ. Did you put any sillycone sealer on the output shaft splines on the D-18 when it went back together? That is a really common leak source that tends to look like everything BUT what is actually leaking.

I coated them with super 300 per Moses Ludel. That is where I thought the leak might be but the case is too wet behind the spline.

If it were the spline, would the leak not be dripping primarily off the parking brake drum or backing plate?

    True.

I'm planning to paint my cases "cast metal grey" so that I can track down the leaks better, or so the theory goes...

That's why I went with orange. Should have left them black :)

that's why I switched to FLAT black. all leaks are shiney.
