Mine is definitely a 1-piece 44, has the large front signals, but the side markers are on the hood, not the fender, and dual auxillary fuel tanks - its an odd-ball for sure. i've been able to trace its history through some local mechanics and friends of the original owner (former professional wrestler) and its all original - well, what's left of it is.

If I understand correctly they went to the 2 piece after using the 1 piece? My '70 has the 2 piece. Not sure what my other '70 had, they're long gone.

The two piece were the first D44 then they went to the one piece or flanged.
Sean, you could be right on the year, I know Lone Wolf has one but I can't remember what year it was.

Enos, never noticed yours had dual tanks, don't see that much. Where is the fill tube located? Although not a factory option, there were aftermatket tanks available. Still don't know who made them though. I've seen a few 72/73's with the dual auxillary tank set up. Tanks were installed under the rockers, something like the old International Travelall. Filler tubes were either installed on the front fender or under the hood. I think they were something like 8 gallon tanks.

Yep, mine are under each of the rockers with the fill tubes in the front fenders. I did find a site with factory specifications stating the sizes of the main and auxiliary tanks but I don't think I saved the link - 8 gallons sounds right though.

That's awesome. I've owned several and have seen pictures of the auxiliary tank option but have never actually seen one on a vehicle. Mid-year 69 seems to be when the markers changed locations, etc. At one of the Jeepster Jam get togethers a few years ago I was parked next to a 69 that did not have the markers. Mine was titled as a 70 but built the same month in 69 as the one sitting next to me. Dunno? Hurts my head to try and figure it out.

Dennis - I seem to remember a lot of the oversees pics (Spain, etc) that showed a lot of aux tanks. There is a Spanish Jeepster site (they call them Comandos with 1 "M") that Lee and I have registered to. Communication issues aside we have been swapping info, lies, etc such as they have to get permission from the Fed for any suspension modifications (lift).

That's more like it, I knew going back to two piece couldn't be right. Same as the early 5's. My '70 with the two piece might not be a '70 either, who knows.

My 70 has the reflectors on the hood. I think they were just trying to use up old stock in preperation for the AMC buy out. Who knows :? .

Did the D30 come with two piece axles as well? I have a 69 commando the diff case looks like a D30/35 not D44. This axle does have some sort of locker in it and it works very well. I would like some lower gears though. Anyone have any laying around?

All rear D30's were/are two piece axles and a locker was available. What gears are in it now? Not sure the tallest gears you could go with before you'd have to change the carrier, I think it's around 4.27 or something, not exactely sure.

I'll have look tomorrow and figure out the ratio. I do know the front and rear are different, (this way since I got it) and I want to get it right.
