this is the first time I have submitted a thread so please bear with me as I attempt to do this. I have a 1978 original cj5 "levis" jeep, all parts are stock and it is in almost mint condition. Does any one know why levis and amc joined for the one year to make this model? I understand they also went with the gremlin same year. Any ideas where I should look? thank you

    Welcome!

It was a marketing gimmick and it wasn't one year I didn't think.

Right, marketing gimmick and pretty sure it spanned many years. Levi's edition Jeeps had a special Levi's sticker on the side and "Levi Denim" upholstery in either blue or tan. Not sure how many Jeep or AMC models Levi came on, I had a 78 Cherokee with the Levi interior, so I know it wasn't just the CJ line. I've seen J-series trucks with it too.

Just a marketing deal, similar to an "Eddie Bauer" Bronco or an "Orvis" Grand Cherokee.

A gimmick, but the fabric (actually textured vinyl) they used on the seats was pretty nice. I recall they continued the fabric without the Levi's badges after the marketing agreement expired (or was terminated?).

I had a Levi's tan 'factory replacement' Bestop on my '73 ... looked sharp, and was very practical.

I have a 75 Cj5 Levi's Edition. Other than the Levi's buttons on the seats and the logo on the body I see no real difference.

I am amazed at all the respondses, thank you. I was hoping the levis status might make it a bit more valuble, or rare(r). I have just re-built the 258 and had a very hard time trying to set up the emmision stuff. It was all diconected when I bought it and had screws in the ends of hoses which led to no where. Any idea where I could find pictures to make sure all is in the right place? it seems to be running alright now.

Year? Model? Equipment? State origin (ie CA or not)?

    Reviewing the thread, year = 1978, model = CJ-5 (?), engine = 258, California?

The best reference is the factory manual (FSM or TSM) ... I have the '77 manual which will be close, but the '78 will be different - likely different enough that you'll need it if you need to pass a visual. Reply about the specs, and I can list the devices for '77.

The Levis model was available from '75 to '86.The material for the interior & top simulated Levi's denim jeans' texture and stitching and came in tan or blue. Early versions had a red "Levi's" decal above the Jeep emblem behind the front wheel opening. This package was available or included with many other packages. It was very common.
