My speedo is just like everybody else's. Still has oil and charging light even through it has the gages.
Don't know what to think of bryankaler's JEEP. Some things I notice is it has the dash pad, gages, looks like there are the holes for the original style roll bar, but the decal is odd. Is it just the way the picture is, or is the grill white? Also is the tail gate a newer style? Wonder why in the ad he had some paint to sale with it?
This JEEP just brings up all kinds of questions.:? This may be a case that the answer is never found.

I have few doubts if the dash is purple on the backside, it has the padded dash, and gages. It seems doubtful that those would be added to a Jeep. Decals and tailgates can be changed easily. The other stuff somewhat, but just doesn't seem like something most POs would do to a Jeep, you know?

Wiring harness would be a dead giveaway though, right?

The VINs weren't any different on the Renegades though????

Trim tag was with the paint code but it doesn't tell much other than a custom color.

If I had to guess, I would guess it was a R I originaly and has been repainted, probably the same color, and other things done to it. The reason I say repainted is because of the newer decal. I don't think there is anyway that you could get the old decal off and put on a new one without having to repaint it. They just do not come of without hurting the paint. It looks like the decal is a newer one with the bottom leg cut off. One of the tale tale signs of it being a R I to me is the dash pad. I could be wrong, but I don't think they were a extra that you could get except on a Renagade. Gages, roll bar, skid plate were all items that a dealer could get, but I don't think the dash pad could be gotten.:)

well... i don't feel so dumb about being confused. the more research i do and from everyone's help here, i've sure learned how complicated that time in Jeep's history was. anyway, it looked as if there might of been doubts about the purple on the back side of the dash, so i thought i might post a pic of it. maybe this will help? thanks again for all of your efforts.

There's usually a healthy dose of skepticism that goes with any of these Renegade(ish) Jeeps.

Previous owners do so many silly things and so few were made. So little good documentation and so on.

Were you guys saying the wiring harness is a dead giveaway cause the colors of the wires are different? If you haven't looked or didn't know I recently completed the wiring diagram I have been working on forever from my '71 R1... I think it is in the tech library with the other wiring diagrams. They certainly seem to be completely different wire colors.

Also, I can tell you the OIL and CHARGE indicators are on the my R1 speedometer, but there are no bulbs, and the backside has what looks like masking tape over the holes. I don't know if that was to keep light from randomly shining through there and fooling someone into thinking the oil light was on...
