Re: Where's My VIN? (New VIN Project, Please Help Out)

Hey saw a really nice all original cj5 at the car show to day. 6000 original miles original bark blue paint with a white whiteco top. The guy swore it was a '57 but I was sure it was a '56. 1-8 speedometer (56) shackles in the rear on the front springs,(56) faux battery box, and snorkel cut out. serial # 57548 26481 Now when I check the # it looks like it truly was a early '57?

That makes me feel better, I was sure it was a 55 or 56 but the guy was sort of a jerk and "told me how it was" and I started second guessing myself a little. I had quickly read over the vin # stuff and had read the part about the first two #'s being the year? oops. the speedo was def. the '56 1-8 one though. Thanks!

I have a new Vin number to add 8305 C17 352656. I believe this to be a 1969. I have no title and have just started my research and restoration project.

    Any additional information is appreciated.

Re: Where's My VIN? (New VIN Project, Please Help Out)

I've got a 1970 with a VIN# of 8305017361334. From what I've read in the "Standard Catalog of 4x4's 1945~2000", and I quote, "The last five or six digits were the sequential production numbers. Serial number range: CJ-5: 8305015 or 8305C15-259487 and up."

To answer the questions that started this thread...here's what I know so far...
    1.) 8305017361334
    2.) September, 1969
    3.) Registered as 1970
4.) No on the shackle reversal (has the optional original heavy duty spring package)
    5.) Dana 27
    6.) No snorkel cut-out
7.) Bottom mounted wipers with top of glass flat
    8.) Large front turn signals
9.) I'll get back to you on this one...
    10.) Underseat fuel tank
    11.) Hood Mounted Reflectors
12.) Windshield washers located on hood (I'm assuming you mean the sprayers)
    13.) Single Stick Transfer Case
    14.) Uhhh?!
    15.) No battery cover
16.) No idea what you mean by this one?!
    17.) 12V
    18.) Key Start
    19.) 2 electric wipers
20.) Yes to hood safety latch...no to prop rod.

Am I correct in assuming that my new project is a 1960? It is a CJ5 with F134 and pto winch.
    Serial number is 37548 115743.
    Thank you,

    Re: S/n

I'd start by checking Zoomer's PDF.

The SN would just be 115743 though.

    Your prefix (if it's a CJ-5) is 57548.

Ok, so Im new to this site along with the cj's. I got my serial # and vin # but anytime I find something bout the jeep it always says to refer to tabel 1 and its usually stats its universal. Not sure what that means, just trying to find some info on the jeep. I know its a 56' for sure, just curious bout more info on it.

From Table 1 prefix 57548 is a CJ-5. Serial number 41405 was built in 1956. Universal was a term they used in reference to the CJ series. That's about all the info the VIN can give you. If you have specific questions there are people here that can answer them.

Re: Where's My VIN? (New VIN Project, Please Help Out)

OK, need some help here (and this is my first post)...

But all I have is a frame and I'm trying to figure out the VIN from just the stamping of the serial # on the frame. It reads "A217070" and from what I've searched through and read it's a '66 and used to have the V6. I know it's the V6 because the motor mounts are still on the frame. But I assume the "A" denotes the engine and the last six are the serial, making it a 1966. My question is then, would the preceding digits be 8305, or the 57548 both followed by the "A"? So is the correct VIN 8305A217070 or 57548 A 217070? I think I just answered my own question since there weren't any 12 digit VINs. I guess now I'm assuming the original VIN was 8305A217070. I hope this makes sense.... before I go to DMV...

What do the other number on the frame represent? I couldn't find any info on those. There's "622L" and a "5" elsewhere. Thanks in advance.

Thank you. So when I go to DMV and do an inquiry do I put the "A" between the 8305 and 217070? Thanks.

    Nice looking Jeep there!

From the info I have, '67 model year for 8322A/B started with serial number 16943 so I think your's would be #81 for '67. Last serial number for '67 was about 17450 (starting serial number of last month shown was 17421 and they were making about 25 per month then) which would make the '67 run about 507 units. This is assuming the data from the CJ3B page is correct and their assumption that a vehicle built in August is a new model year vehicle.

Here are the links to the CJ3B pages regarding serial numbers:

Just curious where you got your production numbers? Always looking for more information.....

Zoomer, nice to meet you and thanks for replying. Check out this site which has been very helpful to me in identifying my jeep, the block, and the cylinder heads as original to my vehicle.

They may be incorrect with their numbers but they are the same as shown on the earlycj5 site. Check it out and letme know what you think.
