yea.......the gauges are not in the best location for visibility.

Speeding has never been a problem in OLD YLR. Anything over about 60 mph is just flat-out dangerous. I still have the original suspension and original steering gear. Both are on my short list for upgrades when funds become available......

    i have a copy of
    'the story of the jeep'
    and under the 1975 section
there is a picture which shows
the two holes in the lateral windshield area!!
looks like they are plugged with
    rubber grommets!
now i wonder just what accessory
    went here?
    a fancy mirror maybe

Mine is a 74 & I have those as well, however, mine still have the bolts...they are for the nuts that hold the upper bracket for the original style soft door. The bracket actually mounts to the inside of the windshield frame. There is also a "U" shaped extrusion (for lack of a better description) that held a cord or welt that sealed up the upper half of the door. This was attached with rivets. On mine, the hole you have on the front surface of the frame has a snap for the original top. However, my snap hole would have been smaller than what you have.

    hello all
it's been almost 3 years since i've been on this forum!
since then, i've put on stock bumpers and
the old rims off my original CJ-5!!
it has been running pretty good
but needs a new exhast and muffler.
my son and i have been having fun burying
it in snow in the winters
and digging it out with the bobcat.

i would like to buy a winch
mainly to pull cars onto my 16+2 flatbed trailer
i also have an enclosed 20ft trailer.
would like to get a winch that i could use on the jeep
    and both trailers.
which one would be the best to get?
    thanks

From what I have been told a Warn winch can run continuously without burning up its motor. If you are going to use a winch all day long, then the Warn is the product for you. Personally, I have a Bulldog 8000lb and have never had any major issue....but its not used all that often.

No personal experience, but JP has a guide to budget winches that's well regarded.
    http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/trail/154_0907_affordable_winch_buyers_guide/index.html

If you search for "Ramsey vs. Warn" or SuperWinch or Mile Marker and similar with Google, you'll find lots of info.

Supposedly Warn is the 'best' brand, and is known for having a high line speed. You get more power either by applying more force or by going faster, so I expect line speed is where you'll see the first compromise for a lower price.

If you anticipate doing any intensive winching, or long in duration winching, spend the money on the better winch. better being a Warn or a Ramsey. Milemarker specializes in hydraulic winches which are good for long duration pulls, but are slower than death and wouldn't work well on your trailers. Personally I would stay away from the budget winches, but if all you are doing is pulling yourself out of the occasional mishap and trailer duty, then the rugged ridge and other budget winches should be fine. Just be sure you carry a snatch block if you go cheap.

If budget isn't a problem go buy a Warn. Just a personal preference, but it is a common preference if you know what i mean. I have a XD9000i, It's a good winch, and I'd recommend it. just about any warn in the 8-9 thousand club is a good buy. by far the undisputed king of offroad winches is the 8274 and the 8274-50 but they can be expensive if you don't find a deal and they are awkward to mount, especially to a receiver hitch like i assume you will use for your setups. But i have seen it done, so it's not impossible.

    ***STAY AWAY FROM TABOR WINCHES***
they are the budget series from warn. they are junk. I had a 12k on my dads wrangler and it was constantly not pulling, draining the battery, making huge amounts of nasty noise, the free-spool stopped working within a few months, and it was unreliable. I know someone with a 8k and he burnt out two of them in a row. Don't let the cheap price and warn backing fool you.

And with any budget winch (or any winch really) carry a snatch block. I have seen many budget winches not pull on a single line, but when doubled did alright.

the normal way to attach a winch to multiple places is a receiver hitch. You put a receiver hitch facing forwards on the front of the jeep and one rear facing on the front of the trailers. most auto places sell heavy gauge electrical disconnects that are convenient for running power to the winch. If you are handy with fabrication it easy to make the winch side, or you can buy them.

this is one way it can be setup the other big advantage to receiver hitch mounts is if you run power to the back you can move it to the rear if you need it.
