Building my 66 CJ6 to look capable of things it will never do

    I've been lurking here off and on for years and decided my latest jeep was a keeper, so I joined up. I say "latest" jeep cause this is the 55th jeep I have owned. I bought my CJ6 off CL out of Mississippi over the holidays. It is home and the tub is off the frame already. I ordered 3.5" wrangler lift springs from Quadratec and all the stuff I need to outboard the springs from Ruffstuff. The body will not be altered. I'm installing a D44HD up front and a 14 bolt in the rear, both full width, and to be different, I'm doing them both SUA. I do not need a lot of height, and with 4.10 axles a 33" tire will put me in the sweet spot for power. I plan on suspension seats mounted to a full cage, and Saginaw power steering-which is what I have been looking at the most on here lately. Making room for that column looks like a challenge with the front dump exhaust. I'd also like to install a T-18 with a Dana 20, but keeping it passenger side drop is required and I don't want to drop money on an adapter if I can avoid it, as that money will be well spent elsewhere. Oh, and my jeep came with a decent full hard top, so I'll be fixing it up nice as well. Coming from the south, the jeep is not very rusty, and all of the fasteners actually unscrewed-something we are not used to on jeeps this old around here! I'm glad to be here, and look forward to gleaning much knowledge from all of you and hoping I can help someone else along the way.     Have you thought about ground clearance issues with a 14bolt and 33's? That just seems like WAY overkill for 33's.

    When you create or edit a post there's some icons along the top of the edit space- third from right is for inserting links to pictures. Click on it, click on "insert from URL", unselect "retrieve remote file & host locally", paste the link into the text box & click "OK". If you want to see the actual coding click "go advanced" at the bottom right of the edit space.

    open 2 tabs one here and one to your photobucket account
    click on the picture you want to post to the right of the pic are 4 choises
    click the IMG one and it will show "copied " them move to here and paste

    When you reply to a post, click on Go Advance. After you enter your post, click on Preview Post and what you see there will be your post. If you like it click on Submit Post

    Ok, I think I see how to do the pics and I'll try that tomorrow when I'm back on my computer. On the iPad now and don't want to try it from here. I got photobucket all set up.

    Now, for a technical question. Found a ford t-18. I get what is required to mate it to my v-6 bell with the drilling, welding a tab on, etc. what is required to mate it to my d-18 transfer or a Dana 20 transfer? All the fords were drivers side drop weren't they? Is that where the high dollar adapter comes in? Also, do I have to use a hydraulic clutch? Seems like I should be able to keep the stock pivot and cable as long as I can keep the ball on the transfer end of the tube...
    havent ever done a tranny swap, but while the tub is off it looks like the right time. Sorry for the lack of caps, but typing on this iPad makes me crazy. Been reading t-18 posts for hours and haven't seen answers to those questions yet. I have seen reference to using a scout adapter for the 20. Thanks!

    14 bolts is overkill with 33" inch tire....the pumpking of a 14 bolts wont leave big clearance under it. Dana 44 with be perfect. Been runnning a 360 with t18 with tsl 36" for 2 year, rear dana 44 with welded carrier, never broke axle yet.

    Also 14 bolts weight way much more than a dana 44.

    You can take the stock T18 Jeep tranny to Tcase adapter and drill/tap it to the Ford Case. You then need the output from the Jeep T18 (or kit with both) for the input to the Tcase. The last one I did I gathered the parts and then bought what I needed from R&P including a case with all the fab work done and ready for the guts. I also had a D20 adaptor milled down to fit the small hole D18 I was putting behind the T18 Tranny.

    Lots of moving parts and options, but once you get it figured out - they work well together. Nick is our resident expert on the T18 install - check the thread like this one for details:

    Welcome to the forum,
    Here is a pic of a Wagoneer D44 next to a 14 bolt. Not the best pic to show the difference but it's a huge difference because the D44 is about a foot closer to the camera. The 14 bolt with 33" tires will leave you with just under 10" of ground clearance not to mention the lack of fuel tank clearance if you have the rear mounted gas tank.

    Well, that worked, so lets get to where we are as of yesterday. Tub is off, powerwashed it all after thoroughly soaking overnight with a citrus degreaser on all of it, and then brought in and put on jackstands for the axle removal, which will take place this evening.

    A big THANK YOU for guiding me through the picture posting issue. Should have minor updates as we proceed. I won't bore you with the "installed a bolt" stuff, but will try to show my outboard installation clearly. Got the outboarding brackets from RuffStuff today, and they are TOP QUALITY. Axles coming out are 3.73 ratio as determined by the "spin and count". I found a Ford T-18 and a Scout T-? with a Dana 20 behind it. If I can verify the Scout tranny is a T-18 I'll buy that stuff. Then it looks like I will need the one piece bellhousing since mine has the adapter, right?
