Good info here, except they forgot to explain that the biggest contributor is friction between the internal parts. Every one I've seen has had the ubiquitous Jeep rust issue. I used emery paper and polished each contact point and made them shine. White lithium for the moving parts. NO lubrication on the rubber wheel other than the pivot. Luckily mine was still soft enough to work. Think I just read where someone used brake fluid to soften. At one time there was a commercia product for rejuvenating the rubber rollers in VCR's.

 

I had an issue with my right rear brake light not working, after looking everywhere I finally found the double male plug by the heater box on the firewall was dirty and lost contact. Took me a while to find it so I took each one apart and cleaned them one at a time, no problem since.
