Not sure why I suddenly have the urge to find a diesel for my CJ :). That's awesome progress and looks great.

Thanks gents, still chasing the rattle noise in the gearbox.

Pulled the transfer case apart and except for the front output bearings being a little clicky in one spot everything else looks ok.

Ran it without the transfer case and the noise is still there so it is in the gearbox itself. Pulling that apart next to see if anything is an obvious problem.

No obvious problems in the gearbox. The bearings are all good and the gear teeth are looking like still new, even without polished areas to show any wear to speak of.

Tried a few things and had it back together and pulled apart a few times but nothing made a difference to the sound.
The noise seemed to be mostly from the only straight cut gear pair in the box so I believe it is just gear backlash and I have been chasing a ghost. But I did learn a bit about the gearbox and now am certain that there is nothing nasty waiting to surprise me on a track or road somewhere in the future.

Next step is to put the springs and axles back on the chassis but I am not impressed with the original leaf plates so have made some new ones.

They have bent shock mounts and some have small cracks from an edge to one hole, the holes are too small for the new U bolts and I want to protect the U bolt nuts so these are not worth modifying.

So made some new versions that are a bit more serious.

    Thanks Josh.
Went to an amphibious jeep and military vehicles get together last weekend.

Lots of jeeps and vehicles from WW2 vintage and newer.

I liked this one with "wilson" as a passenger and a platypus mascot at the dash[IMG]

Photos taken from the webpage of the group.

The track was interesting, looked like a BREN carrier but with a different front and mounting a small bore cannon. 37mm I am guessing.

So while I am having some jeep time, I am getting a little bit more done each day.

Got the springs and axles attached to the chassis with new poly bushings, will use temporary spring shackles until I decide what height I want it to sit.

Installed new pinion seals to front and back diff and got a new front yoke to suit the 1310 series uni joints instead of the smaller 1210 series that was originally on the front.

Moved on to cleaning and painting the hub and brake components ready to start assembling.

Cleaning the hubs of old crud I pulled out the bearings to do a proper clean and decided now would be the best time to install new bearings so they are on order.

Decided to go a little bit flashy and paint the steering knuckles and brake calipers signal red.
    Everything else is boring black.

Got a few real jobs on next week so a bit of jeep time on the weekend then I will have to pause for a short time.

Oh, while I think of it.

Does anyone know what order these connections in the alternator plug of an isuzu equate to?
    Alternator details are Hitachi, LR150-78C
    [IMG]

It has 3 terminals, sense+, lamp and ignition are there. I just don't know which one the exciter / sense+ is to get the alternator output going.

Not having much luck with google searches so if anyone might have any info / knowledge, or know where to look for it, it would be appreciated.

Do the wires just go directly into the alternator? Or into a removable cover on the rear? It is surprisingly similar to the Subaru alternators I use on my junk. I just went out and dug one out of the snow. Here's the tag on the side and a shot of the back with the exciter marked with arrow. Hope it helps.

No such luck for me ITLKSEZ.

No diagram on the makers label and the the wires go directly into the alternator through a rubber seal so I would have to dismantle it to see where they go to internally.

The one plug diagram I did find that was marked with the terminals purposes, but the single connection above the double was in the opposite position, so I am still not sure if it is correct.

I am tempted to do it, but not sure that hooking up a live wire to the terminals one by one till I get voltage out of the battery terminal on the alternator rear is wise or would it possibly destroy something if the current went in to a "wrong" terminal.
So I thought ask first, be stupid later if no answer come up.

I've done it. It threw a spark or two, but it didn't wreck anything. I'm not too concerned with wrecking mine though, because I always grab another one for $10 every time I'm at Pull and Save. I probably wouldn't be as eager to destroy it if I didn't have a pile of spares.
    Good luck.

That alternator is worth about 300 bucks here so I am not keen to wreck it.

This is the plug diagram I have found so I am almost sure the S+ one is in the same location on mine.
Just that odd Lamp terminal being in the wrong place worries me a little bit.

The terminal marked "L" on mine is the exciter, judging by the diagram on the label.

Maybe just switch to a Subaru unit? :D

Is the diagram of the connector on the cable or the terminals on the alternator? The L terminal will switch places depending on the view.

Yeah I did think of that possibility as well homersdog.(y)

I found that plug diagram on a website selling alternators so common sense would say it is looking at the open end of the plug on the alternator.

Got the rear hub brake setup organised
New cylinders, hub seal and brake shoes.

Front steering knuckles setup with new king pin bearings and oil seal installed.
Need longer bolts for the axle stub so that the plate for the brake calipers is secured.

Got moving the knuckle with 5lb preload on the knuckle bearings which is on the light side I believe but any tighter feels to stiff to my way of thinking.

I have delayed testing the alternator today. :worry:
Will probably do it tomorrow and also work out the glow plug timer I got from a Kubota tractor to see if it will be usable.
