So I Bought A Rebuilt F134 For $350.

I bought a rebuilt F134 engine two weeks ago for $350. The guy I bought it from couldn't get it to run because it kept backfiring through the carb. So he decided to sell it and rebuild another engine. Well I pulled it apart and haven't found anything wrong with it yet. I'm going to pull the oil pan this weekend and check out the bearings. It has been bored out to .60 but I think it has the wrong oil pump here are the pictures. I think the oil pump is for a chain drive L134 because it looks completely different from the one that is in my early CJ5.

Nice find! (Why couldn't I find something like that a couple months ago.)

There are a couple different styles of oil pumps for the f-head. The cam and rotor style pump is original and the plain gear on gear pump is what's now commonly available in the aftermarket. I'm rebuilding an f-head now and can't find the original style pump. A pump from a chain-drive l-head will not mesh with a gear-drive cam (gear pitch is opposite as the chain-driven cam runs clockwise).

Your oil pump is fine. Yours is the gear type, and as William said above, a chain drive style won't install due to drive gear mesh. I see a riveted plate/tag on the side of the engine and the green(?) paint. Is this a military reconditioned engine?
    Nice find!

Backfiring through the carb is usually a timing issue. check that the plug wires/distributor are installed correctly.

Yeah that's what I think is wrong with it. Because when I put a distributor in it with number one cylinder all the way up it is facing down instead of at the 12 o'clock position.

    It's supposed to be at 5 o'clock.

Oh well the one on my early CJ5 is at 12 o'clock I think I'll have to look at it this evening when I get home.

Looks like that was only firing on 2 cylinders at best. Something was off with the firing order or timing.

Depends on which distributor you have; IAD, IAT, IAY... The later revisions of the FSM explain it well.

Now that is an interesting twist. My FSM is an original I bought new in '69, it just explains how to install the oil pump and distributor correctly. Just mentions timing set for non emission and emission, no mention of positions for certain distributors.

I base my comment on memory (dangerous, I know). I'll check both of my manuals later. I do remember that the IAY & IAD are clocked differently (or maybe the oil pump is based on dist. model). Or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about and I need to shut up.:rolleyes: I'm supposed to be building an engine right now. Best if I put the phone down and work. Three weeks till the Willys Reunion!

The engine is missing the crankshaft woodruff key. What size is the key do they take?

I got the letters wrong, but this is what I was thinking of...

The crank timing gear takes a 3/16"x1"dia key. 3/16x3/4 for the pulley.

Dang, that's one to mess someone's mind up. Reading that made my head hurt. Is that manual specific to the 3B?

Reprinted 1965 publication. Covers 2A thru 5/6 plus DJ's, minus V6. My 1977 reprint covers up to 71 and has that same paragraph.

That sounds like the problem right there. (y)

Well, took the time to look further into my manual and under electrical is that same paragraph you showed. I had only ever looked at engine assembly and never looked at electrical for troubleshooting which is where the paragraph is. Seems to me that it would have been sensible for them to reference that in the engine assembly section.
