That HF one is the exact kit I got from Advance Auto Parts like 22 years ago for $75, but in a red case. It does that job, plus many more.

A slide hammer is one of those tools that after you have one, you'll wonder how you got by without it. Just as one example, I regularly use mine to remove backsplash in kitchen and bathroom remodels.

Edit: If you get that one, I'll post a pic of the attachment I made to get the tapered axle out without the hub attached. :sneak:

The HF unit would likely do most everything you would ask of it.

When I pulled my flanged axle shafts I put the brake drum back on the flanged hub backwards and started all 5 lug nuts just a few threads each then used the drum as the slide hammer. It only took a few "smacks" of the drum to pull the shaft free.

Do you need a slide hammer for 30 spline flanged shafts? Mine came right out after I unbolted the retaining plate

Most examples I have seen use the reverse brake drum method oz describes...but thinking I would get the appropriate tool.

I have a slide hammer but lost the axle attachment so that's why I used the drum method.
I recommend that you get a slide hammer with the attachments that suit you, as mentioned, you will wonder how you got by without it.
I've pulled pilot bearings, axle shafts (when I had the attachment), seals, sheet metal, pins, etc. Great tool to have in your tool collection.

Just jumping ahead a bit...I think I am pretty committed to doing the locker install myself....still debating but local shop estimates around here are pushing to me to give it a run....is there a need to mark the orientation of the axle shaft before removing? In other words, much like most things with splines, when re-installing the shafts the splines can slide back in in any way the fit.

The splines are evenly spaced around the circumference of the end of the axle shaft, the internal spline of the side gears that they index into will also be similar in its spline configuration, so no need for any particular alignment marks.

Indeed. If you get one, I assure you that you will use it more than you anticipated. The OTC kit I posted above includes an attachment that threads into/replaces the adjustment screw on a Vice Grip...imagine the possibilities! Neighbor's cow birthing a stuck calf, 5 yr old with a loose tooth, trouble getting the zipper up on your favorite jeans after a big meal...you got it covered! :bananatool:

Holy crap! For two decades I've wondered what that attachment was for! Thank you!
(Now I know the HF set has this.)
