    You may want to look at the oil pump housing at the bottom of the engine. I damaged the oil pump housing on my Jeep when I was younger (by the filter) which impacted the plunger and spring that regulates the oil pressure. When warm all was well, when cold not so much. Do a close visual inspection, it doesn’t take much to distort the housing enough to prevent the pressure regulator from doing its job.

    You need to replace your oil pump, pick-up, gasket(s) and such. Just do it.

    aallison 74 cj6, 76 cj5. Has anyone seen my screwdriver?

    If it were mine this would be a sign the jeep needs a 401.

    Ok guys, finally got back to the truck yesterday, I've rebuilt the pump, it was definitely in need of a freshen up and is now all back together, primed and engine run up. Oil pressure was good 55-60 PSI cold (5w30) and then around 40 psi at idle when warm. However I'm still seeing a drop in pressure as soon as I rev the engine or have constant throttle on, no where as excessive as it was previously but still too much for my liking. It still feels like its starving for oil or sucking air. I feel now I've no choice but to drop the sump again and relook at the intake pipework. Before I do has anyone got any other suggestions.

    40 psi when warn seem a little high to me. TSM say suppose to be at 12-15 psi when at idle.

    I could also be the relief pressure valve. Is suppose to release the pressure past 60-65 psi.

    As much as you have the 10psi/1000 rpm ratio is good.

    Sorry, that is mis leading it was not at operating temp, so somewhere between cold and warm

    I shut it down before it got to full temp as I could already see the oil pressure dropping if i blipped the throttle

    Ok, finally back at the jeep, removed the sump and took some measurements of the pickup. Forgive my measurement units but I didn't want to try and convert them

    From engine block to base of pickup LHS 180mm, RHS 170mm,
    From top of sump (inc gasket) to base of sump LHS 195mm, RHS 190mm.

    LHS = drivers side (US)

    I have looked as best I can at the pipe for cracks or marks but its clean, there is a slight graze on one section but I dont feel it's a crack. I dont seem to be able to post pics yet but I have some if you have a way to see them.

    My feeling is it has been pushed up but the pickup base is still flat and no marks of force or similar.

    I was tempted to but a new pickup and just remove the old one and be done with it, has anyone taken one off in place before? It looks like I'll have to drop the RHS manifold to get rotational clearance. Are they locktited in place? What is the procedure to replace/reposition and secure?

    As always any help is appreciated
