All those axles are passenger side drop. I want one of those too. I would also like to know.

That's the "heavy duty" design with 4 spiders in it, supposedly very beefy. The only downside is that if you're stuck & trying to rock yourself out the unit will unlock & re-lock every time you shift between forwards & reverse.

It says in the brochure that it works in forward and reverse. If there is power applied, why would it unlock just changing direction? I don’t anything about these so looking for a little education.

Jpet had one in bam bam on the 2a page. Basically the way it engages requires a portion of rotation for the pins to climb ramps so when it slacks in the rocking motion it is open and that is apparent in his early trips to moab in 2015 or 2016ish... YouTube search "jpet & moab & bam bam" the older the better

If you look at the pic you can see there are pins operated by a magnet controlled cam ring.

Normally the cam ring rotates with the carrier but when the magnet is energized the ring wants to become stationary. As the carrier continues turning the cam surfaces push the pins in to engage the clutch, at a certain point the pins bottom out & the ring gets pushed around with the carrier. When you change gear directions the carrier rotates back, the ring stops rotating & the pins come back up disengaging the the clutch until the carrier moves far enough around for the cam surfaces to push the pins in again.

Here's mine disassembled, different design but same principle for operations.

I see said the blind man. It does work in reverse but must pass through the neutral or unlocked position. I would think just that little bit of movement is hard on the axles or u-joints.

depends on how hard on the throttle you are. I am running one with the 4 spyder gears in my D44 and it has operated very smoothly for me. When shifting from F to R or vice versa, just ease off the clutch a bit and it takes less than half a turn of the spinning tire to engage. I've never had it engage hard or 'slam' into lock. And I love not dealing with air compressor or hoses...
