So the plan is to go pick up a 1962 CJ5 134, strip it down to the frame, clean, fix and put it back together in its simplest form. It will be used for cruising the beach and backroads. So here goes nothing:

Picking it up and bringing it back to the island.

Finally home and in the garage for dismantle.

Found the original color, will have to figure out what color it is...

That looks like a great project jeep! I had the same hardtop years ago, but it got destroyed. They're pretty rare!

When you say island, do you live on Martha's vineyard or Nantucket by chance? I see you're from Mass. I used to go to both islands when I was a kid. One of my bucket list vacation destinations to take my family someday!

Well it sure is coming apart easy! I do see some issues on the frame that will need to be dealt with.

I like the simple look, no top and roll bar.

Seriously heavy duty plow frame, weighs a ton!

You're absolutely right! Great island for jeeping! My buddy worked on the ferry in college (he lived on Cape Cod), and we would take his jeep all over Nantucket. I miss that place, definitely want to go back.

Looks like a good project. I am building a 69 on the Cape and there is a guy selling lots of small parts on Facebook market place if you need any parts.

Moving right along. This is the second major project in my shop and I must say having space, good lights and heat makes a huge difference!

I used my very old engine hoist to lift the body.

I set the tub on top of the wood frame I had made and used on the 65' Spatz Dune Buggy project.

That thing is so clean already, it looks like it's been restored before.

Okay now who can tell me what these were for?

One on each side and it looks like they were cut shorter at some point? Steps?

    Gone!

Bumper is off and coming up with a plan to repair the rot....

These are not very fun to remove!

In my experience, drill like you obviously did and then hit them with an air chisel. They pop right off.

Thank you, my dream shop. It's 32' wide and 28' deep with a 16' finished ceiling.

I cut off the frame rot and made a filler piece with the damaged original bumper.

    Very happy with the fit.

Rear leaf-spring brackets welded back on.

I also changed out both rear frame shock mounts. Hard not to weld that all the way across but this is how it was from the factory on this frame.
