It might "help" but better to fix the real problem, IMHO.

The steering worm gear wears most in the center 'straight ahead' position, so eventually if it is adjusted snug at center, it will bind at left or right extremes. Apparently the TightSteer has a relief-spring action to compensate somewhat.

  2. In reality there is no real problem.

The car's steering is perfect right now! It's just to gain a bit of comfort.

As you know, the CJ5 steering originally has quite a lot of play.

It can only do a little to help wear in one spot of about 8 wear points

I love mine. From a functional perspective it makes sense over a rigid tension adjustment. I've found the difference to be pretty profound in the 20k miles or so that I've had a tightsteer on my CJ. The ross steering always develops some relative "high" and "low" spots as it pertains to the adjuster screw on the Ross box. There will always be one or two points that limit how tight you can get the adjuster. All I noticed with the tightsteer is that it changes from a rigid adjuster interface to a dynamic adjuster interface. I can now make the steering tighter throughout because the tightsteer will not rigidly bind on the sticky spots.

Tightsteer does help by allowing the sector shaft to float the little bit it needs to. All my ross boxes have one.

Do you find that it adds any perceptible friction?

I find they steer easier and don’t lock up anymore towards the end of rotation.

x2... only real difference I notice is that the "free floating" area in the center is gone. There is consistent contact lock-to-lock.

My steering box needs to be rebuilt. The was a fair amount of slop in the steering, The tight steer Definitely helped a little. I’m certain once my steering box is rebuilt, this will help even more.

It's a wonderful addition to a Ross box. It's the adjuster those steering boxes should have been built with in the first place.
