Bought the A.A. tapered bearing upgrade for my D-18 X-fer intermediate gear and sent it off to Mc Ruff for the machine work. It came back today and the mod looks GREAT! This upgrade should strengthen the X-fer a little plus curb the famous x-fer howl a lot. I took a few pics of the mod.
    Thanks Mcruff, great work!.

Y'all have me wanting to take my d-18 back apart and get the kit, while it's easy to do.

Had the same set-up on my dana 20. Way quieter than before....hold the gear tight in place. Solve the biggest issus of those transfert case.

    Also make re-assembling realy easier.

My D18 rattles and howls. Worse at cold temps, hardly at all when it's warmer. So, if I have to rebuild, why not change to the taper bearings? Seems smart to me. I am unable to view the pictures, says (you do not have permission....). So, what's involved in the conversion? They bore out the inside of the gear I suppose?

  7. what does this mod do?

what's the advantage of tapered bearings?

Once you purchase Advance adapter's X-fer bearing up-grade, the intermediate gear will need to be bored out for the cups. Mcruff does the machine work.

tapered bearings eliminates the 101 needle bearings and, adds strength, thus a stronger X-fer case. ALSO, with the new taper bearing upgrade, one can adjust the preload better and the famous X-fer case howl is greatly reduced. IF your X-fer needs rebuilding, it's worth the cost.

I've never heard of this being done to the Dana 20, always thought it was only for the 18. I "think" I have a teralow kit in route and if this is essential for the 20 I'll do it at the same time.

When I had my terra low D20 built I sprung for the roller bearing intermediate. It's really not necessary with a D20...... but when your building the ultimate D20 you kinda get caught up in things......

The kit work with both d18 and d20 transfert case.

Even the dana 20 i recommend it. Under heavy demand the trust washer that hold the intermediate gear will worn out causing the gear to move back and forth, misaligned the gear causing them to broke. With the intermadiate gear shaft kit, it will stay where is suppose to stay.

The dana 20 doesn't put the same side loads on the intermediate shaft as the 18 does, so it doesn't wear as severely. I guess the tapered bearings couldn't hurt, it's only money!

Well, I'm going to be in there anyway. I'd hate to get it apart and realize it needs it.

Thanks guys! Just sorry I have been so slow lately, seems like work and life have slowed me down an awful lot in the last 2 months. Seems like one minor disaster after another and with overtime at work it’s been hard to get anything done except on Saturday evening and Sunday. I have one on my mill right now to finish and mail either Saturday or Monday.

I've been eying my stuff for the past few days thinking the same thing. I put it all back together, but reused the Intermediate shaft because it looked practically brand new. But now, I'm thinking I might take it all back apart while it's accessible and fix the flaw, while the parts are still being made and guys like Mcruff still do the machine work.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Intermediate gears can be changed/swapped out with transfer case in chassis.
    Not necessary to completely disassemble.
