3b Act II

Like ripping off a band-aid....roughly 3 hours of tacking. Glad it's done.

 

I got the steering gear in place and I'm ok with how the drag link looks. I spent a few hours moving the winch around and it will fit just fine but I'll have to mount it up high so the pto shaft doesn't hit the pitman arm at full lock.

 

Tacked the steering gear in place and got the drag link cut out and tacked together. Here you can roughly see how high I have to mount the winch. Not a big deal but now to figure out the winch mount. It's a really tight fit...

 

It's not much.... I wanted a piece of 2x5 but there was only 3x6 on hand at my steel supplier. I recently got a propane/oxygen torch and after figuring out how to get a neutral flame it is my new favorite tool to carve steel. I took a little time to try and clean up the ends where I capped off the tubing. The tubing is only there to support the winch. I planned to reuse my old bumper.

 

Doesn't look quite proportional but it will have to work. Currently undecided but the old plow mount will either be welded to the front of it or I will sink it into the winch mount. The header is installed and the entire pto shaft *just* barely clears everything. I've decided how to tackle the engine mounts and that'll be after I get the steering shaft routed. A few more weekends and it should be about ready to run.

 

Finally got the rear axle centered under the thing and started playing with the driveshaft, pinion angle, and universal joints.

I wrote down the original numbers.

A few weeks ago I was looking at the universal joints...
I have Toyota drive flanges on the D60/14b and need a conversion joint to go from 1310->Toyota
I measured a few universal joints I have and on one of them, the cross measured the same as the Toyota, and the caps fit. Voila, homebrew conversion joint at no cost. Tomorrow I will go inconvenience some auto parts store employees and measure every 1310 joint I can get my hands on to see what brand works.

Spring perches burned in, rear brakes installed, and the new throttle cable and such are installed.

 

New engine mounts and some frame mending where the crossbar mounts. Just about done trying to fabricobble pieces for this.

 

Drilled and tapped a few holes and the engine is sitting on the mounts.



I started on the rear shock mounts. Don't mention the ubolts. Months ago when I ordered them I got the wrong length and I wasn't trashing $60 worth of ubolts.

 

Driveshafts and shocks installed. Coming up on the home stretch.

 

Will the Fhead have enough power to turn the dana 60s?

 

Doubting the power of the mighty fhead...O ye of little faith.
On a more serious note, it has 37s, 3.73 gears, and a cam designed for higher rpm. I suspect it'll be a complete dog and never come out of low range.

3.5 ecoboost is a good source for one turbo of appropriate CFM for a 4000rpm 2.2L.

I won't say it's a good idea. But it would be the correct size to send up to 175hp down your slotted rods.

Yep, you seem to have memory loss from the whiplash. That just goes to show how powerful they are.

 

Yeah, that's going to be a struggle.

 

Hopefully, the ol girl still has some of that magic left in 'er and I won't have to regear just yet. I'd run 33s if I had a set but diff clearance would be terrible.

I'm really not concerned with the gearing vs power. It's not a rock crawler; it's an old woods beater.  I've seen better equipped rigs with poor drivers and at that point all the fancy mods are useless. Imo...

 

If I get crackin' early enough tomorrow she might make some noise by the end of the day. I think I'll sink the fairlead into the winch mount.

 

I thought it would be running tonight but I was missing the fuel fittings for the fuel cell. Oh well. I put in a traction bar (tractor link) to alleviate driveshaft woes.
Not really happy with the fairlead so I think I'll go with synthetic to get a more compact piece. Ironically out of three different fairleads, they all measured roughly the same. Go figure...

When I bought the MB/GPW it came with a Meyer 7 foot(?) plow setup minus the stuff to connect it to the Jeep. The pump is an E46. Anyhow that's why I kept the old plow junk on there. I figure I could maybe push some dirt and gravel around with it. I'll look around and see what the brackets look like and try to make something.

 

She lives!! I still have some tuning and other things to mess with and there are now wiring gremlins I have to sort out.
