It appears the starter on the 64 I'm looking at is going bad. Bendix likes to stick. So, in hunting I'm seeing prices all over the place. Where do you turn to for a quality, reliable starter and is there a "high torque" option?

So why not fix or replace the bendix?

Or get the whole unit rebuilt at a specialty shop.

Finding places that repair starters in my part of the world is near to impossible. Most places that claim to, send them out and what comes back is a gamble.

I think Nick meant to do a search on this forum for "Toyota starter". You should find some info on what might swap in.

Looks like any 2F starter will work?

Yes you may have to drill the mounting hole one size larger. 2f holes are metric they need to be sae I can't remember the drill bit size I used

Yeah, I should have been more clear. Thanks for clarifying.

  14. The bolt holes I drilled two sizes over. The factory bolt is 1/2.

    Works very nicely :)

    A few nits-

-These starters work fine with anything other than the WW2 military & early CJ2'sIIRC Wiollys went to the bigger flywheel at the same time they changed from a timing chain to gears.

-Spinning over an engine without a head on it is not a good test of how well a starter works, really all you're fighting is the valve springs. I'm not surprised it didn't heat up.

-You don't really need all the drama to make them fit, I opened up the lower hole with a round file & about 10 seconds work.
