Rear Axle Seal.

    I have a M38A1 with a Dana 44 rear end. My question is the outer axle seal. Do need to install a paper gasket between the brake backing plate and axle housing. And then in front of the backing plate a paper gasket and then the seal.

    A paper gasket on both sides of the backing plate, for each backing plate.

    The seal you are talking about is the hub seal, there is an axle seal inside the axle tube as well.
