Tie Rod Hitting Before Stops

I got done with front knuckle seals and thought I would set up the steering stops as I measured like 18 degrees to the drivers side and 20 degrees on the passenger. Turns out the tierod hits itself in both directions (TRE connect to the bell crank hits the tirerod). before it ever gets close to a stop or a tire gets into the spring. Nothing looks un stock but I am wondering if there is a non stock TRE in the mix. I took these pictures with the wheels straight which also show the bell crank is straight as well. Take a picture with the wheels turned, showing what's hitting what.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Seems like a prime candidate to ditch that set-up and go with the one piece long tie rod.. moving the special tie rod end out to the knuckle.

Thanks for the input but I’d rather just fix what I have. It will do highway speed and drives well. Just like to fix this and get a little more turning radius.

Looks like the clamp on the tie rod hits the diff housing. It may be an optical illusion.

Are all your tre’s correct for that application?

Then get the other special tie rod end that will have the opposite angle and should give the clearance.

I'm not home to look at my Jeeps with original steering right now, but it seem like the upper right tie rod end should be straight. Yours looks like it's bent back. If nobody else takes a picture of what it should look like before than I can on Monday when I get home.

So it should be straight after the drivers side ties in? I look forward to the picture.

So either the tre with the hole is bent or the tre hooked to it doesn’t have the right length tapered shaft/too short

I think mine hit too before i put new springs on. It lifted it a few inches and helped with all the clearances.

I believe the angled TRE comes in two different variations, as quoted from jpflat2a. I'm not sure what it looks like in stock form but using the the one with the opposite bend could solve your problem.

Edit: So I just looked at my '66 Tux and it has the same set up you show in your pictures. My jeep hasn't moved in years so I can't vouch for how it all works (stalled restoration) and the tires are flat.

Conclusion, the tierod with the hole in it was bent. Replaced it and the one that hooks to it, problem solved. Thanks for the help
