1960ish Cj5 Blower Question

    I've gone too far into a 30+ year parked CJ5 with a plow that I got from a neighbor when he moved to quit because of the heater. I've done tons of reading, but haven't found anything that deals with my issue.

    The whole heater box and the squirrel cage was a decades old mouse nest. The pee or whatever rusted out the metal cage/wheel. I've read and understand the upgrade to the GM motor, but the PNs listed don't come with the wheel, which I need. I found other threads that are related to the later heater boxes that listed a later Blazer motor, which came with the wheel. I bought it, but the wheel is too big in diameter by a little, which i can deal with, but, the wheel is also about an inch longer, which means I have to space the motor out, as well as reverse the rotation.

    Is this the path that I'm stuck with? Is the original wheel available to adapt to the GM motor? The bottom of the fan box is also rotted, so I'm going to be stuck with a fair amount of metal work for the stupid heater.

    Any ideas?

    You use the stock wheel but you need to disassemble the motor to reverse the brushes.
    Your just reversing the motor input and output wires.

    15amp motor with a recirculating baffle and cabin inlet will be good for at least 3 seasons. Especially south of the Mason Dixon. Biggest advantage will be a working defroster.

    Here's mine after the swap. I would trim it closer next time.

    I found a heater motor with fan that fit mine.

    It was said to be for a late sixties Ford Bronco but I don' know for sure.

    I run an early Bronco heater box in my CJ. It tucks up under the cowl on the passenger side and is similar to the 72 and later CJ boxes. I was working in a Bronco specialty shop at the time and we had stacks of used boxes in the back. They are rather expensive now but IMHO and excellent choice for an upgrade.

    On a side note, I also replaced the paper defrost ducts that mount to the body with a short section of RV pooper hose. I flexed the hose through the slots in the body so they contact the base of the windshield. My defrosters work pretty good now.........

    I spent three years in the middle east, I get flashbacks every time I turn the heater on........................

    I'll have to look for it, but I probably still have the motor and fan originally in my heater. The fan was rusty but not rusted through, and the motor would still run. I used the Bronco unit because the fan was still shiny and the motor seemed to run faster. Let my know if you are interested in that old one, and I'll start looking for it.

    Certainly would be the easiest way out of my issues.
    I'm too early in the process to spend big money on a heater, while still shaking down all the other, "hasn't been on the road since 1985" issues.

    If you are just plowing, who needs a heater?

    Dress warm and leave the top down, so the w/s won't fog. BTDT.

    I used the bronco heater on one and can't remember if I used the original fan or not. My 69 I used the blazer motor and seem to remember having issues as well. Used the original fan on that one. If oldpappy doesn't find it I'd post a wtb add in the classifieds. Quite a few get pulled.

    Fwiw....
    Mine spins fast, and puts out some heat after the blazer motor was added. Definitely makes a difference

    The biggest issue I have is the 15a motor needs a resistor pack to work on low

    My old 62 I had some big 1/2" square by 2" long ceramic resistors I strapped to the steering column. Forget the ohms, but wasn't much.

    This would probably work

    My hatred of electronics... looks like 10 ohms cuts it down from 200-225w to about 100w with 14v input? I'm eyeing the aluminum shell 100w 10 ohm 2 pack. Mostly for ease of mounting and oil/water protection. Am I right that I need a bit more wattage rating in the Resistor? 15amp motor at 12v...

    I don't know what the rating was but the ones I posted where the same physical size. I'll see if I have another around and what the rating was. I need to add a low to my 69 anyways

    Most all Ford and GM products use a resistor mounted on the heater box wall. It is a simple coil style and is cheap. You will need a stock style multi position switch to run it but you can eliminate a bunch of external mounted resistors.

    Those look like awesome fire starters, I mean mice eradicator devices:lol:
    Everytime I hit the blower switch I get a poof of mouse nest flying out
