V6 Radiator Woes

Just wondering....any one ever try a cross flow Rad in a Jeep? I have an old M38 which was removed from a field and it had a cross flow in it.....Fit look good before I remove the locked up engine

 

Installed the Champion Radiator today. Bolted right in and my stock hoses fit fine. I used a goodyear lower
hose # 60685. I had to cut about 1 1/2" off the water pump end. It clears my oil filter by about 3/8".Enough
room to get a filter wrench on. It has a little over 1" clearance between the core and my flex fan, which has a
spacer to clear the vacuum advance on my H.E.I. Took it for a ride and on the road it was right on 160 degrees
which is the thermostat i am running. All in all i am pleased, even though it's a bit to shiny for a jeep. When i get
time i'll get set up so i can post some pictures.

 

That's correct-70 & 71 use a different radiator than earlier V6's

 

Which exact model number of Champion or for what vehicle did you install in your Jeep? And what year do you own?

 

Late '69 also.

 

I used the same radiator shown earlier in this thread, post #38. I have a 1970, but it is most likely a re-titled 1969, as it has a lot of the older model features.

 

Ok got it, just that is not a Champion Radiator, well if it is made by Champion only for Radiator express and not sold by Champion I guess.

 

Well now just tonight I see Champion has listed it for sale other than just by radiator express.

How funny I just did a search on the Champion web site and this CC7071 is not shown when you search for a 1970 Jeep CJ5.

 

I just went through this whole procedure on my 70' just last week.
I ordered the aluminum 3 core from radiator express at the advice of my local radiator shop.
$ 275.00 plus $15.00 shipping. They instantly charged my card, then 5 days later I got an email from them stating it wouldn't be available till late Jan. or Feb.
So back to local shop to recore my original to the tune of $402 and some change with tax!
I installed it and I had a pin hole leak in the top of the tank! I went back and asked why they hadn't caught this upon pressure testing after recore?!? No answer for that so he proceeded to silver solder the tiny leak with a a much too large torch tip! It then had a whole I could put my finger in! He got it plugged up but now I'm concerned how long it will last......

 

Sounds like you should be concerned about his work!
And did you get your money back from the outfit that charged your card?

I did get refunded from Radiator Express.

 

Update for anyone in need of a new radiator. Radiator Express has the Champion CC7071 back in stock as of 2/8/207. Not many in, only 11, uhh 10, mine arrived yesterday.

 

There's another option....

Speedway sell cross flow universal, dual pass radiators, 19" tall cores in various widths for less than $200.

Both outlets are on the passenger side, so a new return hose will need to be had.

Better cooling than a single pass 3 core.

 

I used the mustang radiator the lower outlet is to close to the fan so used electric fan mine is the 17" just a heads up

Looks like it's going to be a tight fit.
I have to unmodify a few things that the peanut farmers that previously owned this Jeep did before I can install mine, and then figure out what the correct hoses are.

 

Mine is not in yet. I pulled the old radiator and dropped the new one in...... almost. There is interference with the steering shaft. Saginaw power steering mod. I needed to make some corrections to the shaft since I put different headers in. And the whole steering shaft really needs to be done different so I guess I'll be doing that too.
