Your opinions on Slick50

    I'm getting my F134 back from the engine shop soon. I have read all the comments on what oil to use. Now how about some opinions on slick 50, greased lighting and other engine lubricant additives. Useful or Useless?

    Obviously I want to get the most out of my new rebuilt Fhead.

    Slick 50 works great on an engine that has some miles on it, but i have heard were it can really tear up an engine without any miles on it because the teflon will not have any cracks or groves and whatnot to go into. I am not sure how it would work on a rebuilt engine, If it was bored out, I would stay away from slick 50 for a while until everything seats again and a little wear is put into the engine. Hopefully someone else knows the right answer to this question since my engine should be coming back from the shop soon too.

    I'd break it in with regular mineral oil, then if you want to use something special go with a synthetic.

Only problems I've heard with Slick 50 is that, in some cases, the Teflon in it can build up in very narrow passages or in the oil filter and actually restrict oil flow....supposedly very rare but can happen. Slick 50 is not much more than synthetic oil with teflon suspended in it. I use Mobil 1in my stuff but that's just my opinion. I've had good luck with it in hot rods and motorcycles.
    When I rebuild an engine I still use "break in" (non detergent) oil for the first 500 miles before changing to detergent or synthetic, although a lot of people say that's not necessary.

    I'm a Mobil 1 guy for characteristics of heat resiliance, less chemical breakdown. I run straight 30 in the flathead but M1 will go into the 3.8.

    For break-in, buy a jug of cheap tractor oil at TSC because it wont be in there long. Many mechanics dont suggest M1 until 20k. I remember 25 years ago seeing the running Slick 50 engine at the fair without an oil pan. I was impressed but I have never bought the stuff yet.

    Not that I'm an expert, but I subscribe to the "less is more " philosophy. To that end, I've never used any "special" oil or additives in any auto engine I've owned. My '71 CJ's 225 has never been rebuilt since my dad bought it new, just regular maintenance including petroleum based oil changes at 3000 miles. Doesn't even burn oil!! I've been driving it since '80, owned it since '83 and have never seen reason to switch... **the above is my humble, yet often ignored, opinion!!**:beer: :rofl: R)

    I've used a product called "Restore" it's blue in color and is pretty thick but maintains oil press. between changes , I tried just oil and pressure would drop when nearing 4000 miles (on my 150,000+ 318) I've not used it in the Fhead since it's still under 35,000 original miles.
    I've also heard great thing's about Marvel Mystery oil.

    Bottom line, it has been said before.. If it worked that good then the manufacturer's would use it and it would be produced in oil form and not as an adative.

    I like Slick50 and have used it in several engines. I always put about 10K on before I put it in.

    I agree with Chris( see your not ignored). The closest thing I have ever added to any motor of mine has been high mileage oil which I think is a crock so plain old valvoline for me( no reason to use it just do)

    DON'T USE IT!!!!!
    I have seen it twice build up on the oil pick-up screen and clog it! A big gob of gunk! You will think your oil pump is going out because of the oil pressure drop. Sure it doesn't happen to everybody. But I wouldn't chance it.

    I might pour it on Jim's weeds, if he wasn't looking. R)

    Seriously though, I think it's a waste of money. You're better off buying a good dino oil.

    I add a quart of lucas ( in place of oil) at each oil change. truck (5.3L vortec) no longer sounds like an old diesel, and the jeep no longer has valve train clicking.

    My Dad used it in my old s-10 when I was younger ... once. It washed all the goo out of every crack and crevice and the engine immediately started leaking like a sieve, after that I used it on on the axles of my pinewood derby cars... dipped the axles in it and poured it through the wheel holes, wiped them clean, then used graphite, placed 1st and 2nd R)
