Alyssa's '65 CJ5 Navy Jeep

Question, what is that black wire coming out from the bottom of the steering shaft by the steering box?

I think that is the completion of the horn circuit?

So that is the ground then correct and the red goes to ?

The wire into steering column is normally 'hot' from the horn, and is grounded by the button in the steering wheel, to activate the horn.

 

Ok thanks, I do not get a reading from + hot side to ground. Does the key have to be on?


Working on the flashers rightr now and one wire is not hooked up (Green).

Will post a pic, maybe if I can get that working then I can splice into that for a turn signal.

Here is the flasher and the green wire is not hooked to anything. One lead is not screwed to the flasher. Just like the red and blue coming out of the harness.

Flashers do not work and I can not get 12v from any terminal/across etc and even w/the switch pulled out.

PITB-Ran a #12 wire from the - side of the battery to the tester lead-then hooked up the + side of the tester lead = 0 volts.

 

Now I ran a jumper from the - side of the battery and tested the + side of the horn w/tester and I get 12v from +/red wire on horn & to ground at turn signal housing. Nothing at the wheel. Will cut out the connector of the steering and replace it as well.

I think I need to clean up all these connections and then start over. I'll add some grounds as well.

Might be easier to rip everything out and ........... well, no, to much work.

 

OK, got the horn working

 

If you have the stock horn, it shows the polarity on the back at the spade lugs. The + is battery hot and is not fused. If you power the + terminal and short the - terminal to the horn housing (or use a ground wire) the horn should honk. So the wire going up the steering column is the grounding wire but it will be hot if tested with a meter or test light until the horn button is pushed which connects the ground point.

 

Thanks. I figured the horn button was ground. Again, I need to clean up the grounds on here. I tested the + sid eof the horn and nothing until I ran a jumper from the - side of the battery.

I replaced the horn button(rubber part) and tested w/another horn I have, kept honking. The horn button (rubber) is shot and even though I pounded it flat (not to touch, it did). So my guess is the horn is shot from have 12v to it all the time.

Guess I'll order a new button and rubber piece.

Thanks for all the help, now back to the Hazards. One thing I did notice was the wiring off the hazards-it has three plug-in's, maybe that is for the turn signal hook up??

 

The 65 did not come stock with a 4-way hazard switch. Remember that the hazard circuit has to have its own flasher can. Not the same one for turn signals.

 

Maybe that's where the green and red wire hoop to - is the flasher can?

Someone have a Pic of their flasher hookup/setup?

Question that came across my mind, concerning the steering setup.

Alyssa would like to keep the Jeep as stock as possible, so with that in mind-If she replaced ALL the steering components would the Jeep ok with that setup or ?

We still have to get her on the road (waiting on the MC) to find out but from 1965, I'm sure there is wear unless the OD is correct/driven around on base etc.

If the set up is in good condition and properly adjusted, why not? They were okay when they were built, and mine is still fine by me after 60 years.

On the other hand, poor maintenance can cause complaints about "hard steering" etc.

We will look at it closer after we pressure clean it.

The odometer? Army jeeps were surplus-ed at 25 or 30 thousand miles, as policy. Not sure about Navy.

Low actual miles on a military vehicle can be normal and valid, although many had second lives with Fire Departments, Civil Air Patrol and other agencies.

 

On my '71 the horn would honk at odd times (4:00 am) I put in a relay triggered with key on power. I'll be in it to stop self honking. Good luck on your project.

Alyssa has been looking at a few soft tops for her yr/CJ5 and all we have run across are 8-900.00 dollar tops.

Can she use a regular or any CJ5 top/doors or ? Peach says (my wife) she can get a plain jane top/doors for about 400.00 bucks. I still have to look into that.

She would really like canvas but the expansion/shrinkage etc if memory serves etc. but that is in the future.
