Need rear spare tire carrier for stock 1965 CJ-5

I have a stock 1965 CJ-5 with the standard rear bumper/hitch/drawbar arrangement. Does anyone know of someone who manufactures a rear spare tire carrier? Probably don't want a side mount or swing to the side. Maybe a pivot down style

I don't think I've ever seen a commercial fold down version-not saying such didn't exist. Do a search here. There is at least one member running one. But it is something you will have to either build or have someone build it (expensive).

That's me. (and at least 1 other member who built a similar one also.)
I really like a fold down design, as it can be lightweight but still sturdy.
The downfall, of course, is it's in the way if you actually use your tailgate very often. I have a rear seat in mine so I almost never open the tailgate.
I've never seen a commercially made one anything like this.

I think Vern, the inventor of the Vern -o -lock, had plans for a tilt down, but I cant find his website.

I like the one on the red jeep. Do you have sketches of the pivot? Is there something that limits travel?

    The ground limits travel LOL!
The pivot bolts to the drawbar bolts just below the tailgate...I've never been happy with the design of it, but it's something that my dad and I knocked out in an afternoon using stuff laying around his garage.
I'd build it differently if I had to do it over, but it's served me well for about 15 years.

Just pull a couple of pins and the whole assembly comes right off.

    I like it a lot.

They do look a lot like Verns setup. When I bought my Jeep, the rear crossmember had brackets like this welded on. Sorta figured they were for a tire carrier.

The blue / green jeep seems to have somthing that limits travel? I wonder if I could get some pictures without the tire showing how the top is connected..
Also can't see the detail on the pivot.
    Thanks

Here's my pivot...Mark's is better. I have to unbolt the bracket if I want to remove the whole carrier.

The actual tire mount is the stock side mount piece.

I use implement pins to hold the bracket to the stock tailgate holes. There's no weight here, it just holds everything vertical.
All the weight is carried on the frame.

Holbrook Specialties built them back in the '70's and early 80's but probably going to be hard to find. Nice design MarkK. Yours looks like it works well also ColoJeepguy

I've been thinking about the piece on the 3B. I remember one side being a slot and the other was a hole so I suppose a person, or along with a friend could unbolt the tailgaite anchors and lift up on one side and just slip the whole thing off of the back of the Jeep. I suspect there was a rattle or 2.

I picked up an early 70's CJ5 with a fiberglass body that had a similar swing down spare tire carrier. It seems to be factory made as opposed to homemade. Not sure who the manufacturer was.[IMG]

I think the tire hitting the drawbar is what is limiting travel in the picture. You could always put the tailgate chains in the arms going out to hold the tire up as well.

I will try and get some more pictures here soon. I have to get the jeep out of storage-its time anyway.

I made this so that the chains would hold the tailgate as well as the spare tire carrier in place, in the upright position. During real life driving it rattled, so I just put some bolts in there and tightened them down. Rattle gone.

I like this setup as it is so easy to take on and off. The weight of the tire is directly on the frame/drawbar. My jeep didn't have the side mount carrier, or I would have used that to make my mount for the rim.

At first I was going to modify a rear spare tire carrier from an old Bronco II but scrapped most of it and just used the aluminum flat upright. I'm the type that just uses what I have laying around the shop.

This is what I made. It is hinged at the bottom. Bolted at the top and bottom for no rattle. Did not want to drill any holes in my Tux to mount it and some of the other ones are of better design.

I didn't want to have one that bolted onto the side of the body so built this one out of 2" x 3" tubing and it mounts to the rear bumper attach holes.

Thanks I made it a few years back after I was going through the same problem as you.

The carrier mounts to the 4-ea 3/8" bolt holes that attach the bumper to the frame. I match drilled the holes from the original bumper and spaced it out using a thick washer. This is the only mounting points to the jeep it is rigid enough there is not a top mount. I used an implement pin 1/2" dia with a clip to hold it shut. I used a stock spare tire mount and welded it to the carrier. THe pivot point is a round piece of steel with a 5/8" hole in it for the bolt. Here are a few more pics. Hope they help.
