If that is a 198, it should have “ears” on the bellhousing\block at the 10 & 2 positions (same as a 215 V8 Buick). Also, in your earlier photos, it looks like the valve covers are on backwards. They’re supposed to be nearly flat/horizontal on the tops. 198s make decent power, just harder to find parts for them at 60 years old.

Howdy - trying to diagnose a gear oil leak and wanted to come here to confirm what this is? Is this a PTO connected to my transfer case? Does anyone have any additional info on these? Do I actually need it, as it seems to be the source of at least on of oil issues.

Looks like the speedometer cable connection is at least one source of the leak.

Yep that's just the speedometer cable. A PTO (power take off) on these old dana 18's is inline with the engine and transmission and could power a bunch of stuff like propellers, blenders, ice cream makers, saw mills, backhoes, generators, air compressors. The later dana 20 has the rear axle driveshaft where our pto goes so they are far inferior on a hot summer day and you need some ice cream and smoothies.

Yup speedometer drive cable. Common leak point since there is no seal there. I install an o-ring to seal mine up.

Thanks all - I was able to get another 1/4 turn on the speedo cable, so I'm hoping that helps. Plan B is to figure out some sort of o-ring. Open to suggestions!

New to the forum. First jeep and first car I have ever worked on, so I’m sorry if I ask any dumb questions! What is this part that has a zip tie going through it, and what do you suppose the zip tie did?

For some reason, seeing things connected by zip ties doesn’t worry me nearly as much as seeing zip ties connected to nothing!

That's the original steering bellcrank bracket. No longer in use because your Jeep appears to have a Saginaw conversion. That's good.

X2, on the retired bell crank mount. it would be a good idea to post in your signature what jeep year and model you have so we can better answer any questions you may have. BTW welcome to the forum.
